Is my 6870 wired up right?

I've just scanned through the thread again, and I still cant see an answer to the original question. I just assumed I'd missed it the first time as the topic seemed to move on.

Do you actually have 2 6pin power connectors going in to the back of that card? And is the card properly screwed into that socket?

After a bit of googling (can't sleep at the mo), I came across a thread on the Asus support forums where a Mod confirmed that boards chipset is v1.1.

So it could well be that the 68xx pcie v2.1 cards aren't fully backwards compatible (same as the reported cases of 5xxx cards).

As with any problem it is hard to 100% certain without any definite manufacturer support info :(.

Which bios version do you have because one of the earlier bios updates addressed a display issue on pci-e cards where the display would not return from sleep etc. That suggests to me that they did fix something to do with the pci-e graphics bios code so I would definitely try the latest bios before splashing out on a new board.

The nforce 610i chipset is PCIE 2.0 so that's not the issue.

Edit - Ok Ignore that, it may well need a bios update as the onboard nvidia graphics only uses pcie 1.1 so it is possible that the initial bios only supports 1.1. The chipset certainly supports 2.0 though.

Seems I was probably wrong on this one (Asus certainly seem to think so) and that its actually PCI-E 1.1 x16 - I would still expect the card to work though expecially as it has booted up several times and allowed you to install windows.

Let us know what bios version you have because as i said in an earlier post there was an early bios update for your board that addresses certain resume from sleep issues with pci-e video cards and that may well have some effect if you have an older bios version. It has to be worth a try at this point surely?

Heres the readme from the bios update that I mentioned..

P5N73-AM BIOS 0303
It is recommended to update BIOS with awdflash and parameter /cc /cd
1. Fix CPU Lockfree function may not function.
2. Fix the system may not be able to resume from S4 after clearing CMOS and plugging VGA card.
3. Hide CPU Multiplier item for ratio locked CPU.
4. Fix Windows Vista may report incorrect CPU frequency when both N2 and EIST are set to enabled.
5. Fix the system may give out warning beeps after resuming from S3.
6. Add support for Intel CPU C state technology.

Yep I will, I know a lot of people on here would have said 470 or nothing, but I value my electricity bill, for all of you who don`t know 150w 24/7 will add up to about £120 a year.I still have a lot of upgrades to do till I am happy, but a small budget is limiting me, I am still on lga 775 for god sakes, and using stock cooling, It looks like it might be a expensive christmas.

150W 24/7 ?? you musn't get much sleep then ?

that is only under full load, at idle (ie not in a game) I think they are about 25W difference ....

He He - well if you are gaming 24/7 you can always save electricity by unplugging the freezer and just ordering takeaways :D

Well anyway fyi my bios is at 0501 already, when I bought it as part of a pre built it was already on that. So I would have already had that fix, and it obviously has made no difference.

Well this problem is getting stranger by the day, just cold booted and it actually managed to use my 6870, very strange. The fix that I was using when cold booting was going into windows 7 with onboard then shutting it down then praying it works. Today I did not even need to do that :)

I would say that this a backwards compatibility problem with the the 5xxxx + cards, and really the only way to fix this is to get a new mobo. I am gonna hang it out for a while to get the funds for a htpc and get some i7 goodness. Thank you guys for all your help, it is well appreciated. I have no clue about firmware and graphics card, but could it be possible ati roll out a firmware fix?
