Basically my brothers looking at a new car for his 4 mile round trip a day. He currently has a 1996 corsa which he used as a first car and he now wants something more modern with power steering, aircon etc.
He's got his heart set on something small as he doesn't need anything bigger which I understand but he's pretty much decided he wants another corsa just an sxi this time and obviously a lot newer.
He has a budget of 5k and I've tried to persuade him to go for something like a fiesta but he won't budge. He's only 18 and he's worried about his "image" as well so won't even consider a polo or anything with an older person look to it. Are the corsa's really that bad and is there anything else to consider?

corsa's are cars built for people who dont care about cars and just want utilitarian transport.

He sounds like he falls into this catageory if he's been driving round in a '90s corsa already.

If he buys a corsa for 5k now, he'll seriously regret it in 2 years time.

5k is a lot of money, especially to an 18 year old. Heck, 5k is a fortune to me and I'm 26 :p

Convince him to wait, if it does die, just buy another rot box until he's at the age to insure something a bit nicer

For 4 miles, I'd cycle

A newer Corsa sounds pretty sensible if he wants something the same as what he has but more modern.

In fact if I said I want something the same as my corsa but newer and some said to buy a newer fiesta I may question their sanity :p.

if he's worried about his image, why is he buying a corsa?

This is the first thing that sprang into my head.

Is it fashionable to drive something largely associated with ******?

5k could probably get him an audi of some kind? A3 maybe.
Say to him, if he gets a corsa, he's got what everyone else has got, if he buys something a bit different and a bit quicker then he's a step ahead.

failing that, Golf gti at the very least?

The 1.2 twinport 05-55 plates have a known problem with baring caps (ze engines manufacturerd in spain) and are known to snap cam shafts. This happened to my old dears one so avoid the 1.2 if going for a 05-55 plate. A replacement engine and fitting is around 1k if this happens.

I personally have a 56 plate 1.4 sxi which I have used for teaching the mrs to drive in and as stop gap car for myself while a messy insurance claim went through, I have been meaning to sell it for the past two years as I bought an astra twin top to replace it but just havent really got round to it. On a good note the worst that has happened with my one is it needed a new main beam light.

If he really wants a corsa then 5k should buy him a nice new low millage model, damn he can have my one for 4k.

People seem to be assuming that his brothers 1996 Corsa is standard, whereas Im guessing if he cares about his "image" it's probably riced up to **** anyway. Am I right?

Ask him is he interested in cars. If he says yes, slap him and tell him to either buy something decent or wait until he can insure something decent. If he says no, just let him get on with it.

Amongst the under 21's, a Corsa with an irmscher badge is 'cool'. It projects the 'right' image. There is no point us trying to understand this because we can't.
