Is my gtx 280 graphics card dying

I was playing a bit of grid earlier and i started to get white sparkling dots appear on screen, closely followed by green jagged lines. The same dots are starting to appear now on the windows desktop and in cod mw2, card is a factory overclocked gtx 280 640mhz core clocked model, temps on idle are 39c, at load its hitting 75c, auto fan speed, using the latest 195.62 drivers.

Quick pic taken with phone cam to show artifacts/coloured dots.

Do you have another screen to test it out with as it might be your screen dying. It's always good to fully fault check these things as it'll save you a lot of time and money in the long run. Also if you can get your hands on a different card to check and see if the same happens so you can check and see it isnt yet another component (e.g. mobo) acting up.

I remeber on 2 gforce 6800 gt cards i had a while back, green lines on screen were the precursor to them dying, i do have a spare vx2025 lcd and an 8800 gts 640 i could try to rule out the monitor, but im suspecting that the 280 gtx is the culprit.

The dots are memory, the jagged lines etc. are the GPU. Slightly strange that they'd both go together, perhaps the power stage on the card is dying or something. Bad news whichever way you look at it though :(

Does the same happen with a different panel or with the other graphics card? Is it possible that it might be a motherboard issue with the PCIe slot? Just a complete shot in the dark here.

Yea, nvidia do this on purpose. The number of cards I've seen/had with this problem is ridiculous. And it's always caused when a card that's a year or so old has a temperature above 70c.

Solution: Set up your own fan profile in Rivatuner. Teach your fan to range from 30% speed at 40c, to 100% speed at 70c. That should protect it from nvidia.

Cant test with the other lcd or vid card yet mate as theyre currently in use on my other system, im currently running a video card stability test, temps so far at 77c and no artifacts. Fan is set to auto, default is 40% speed, currently running at 50%, fan speed only increases to 100% if gpu temp hits 80c.

This is getting stranger now, i can run cod mw2 without issue, a 15 min stability test passes fine, but whenever i fire up grid again the artifacting starts, also continues upon exiting the game back to desktop.

grid in game pic.

Could this be a problem with grid alone? Ive been playing multiple rounds of cod mw2 without issue, max card temp in game is 75c, also ran furmark extreme burn test for a few minutes, (1920x1200 2x msaa) temps leveled out at 86c, auto fan speed. No artifacts in either cod or furmark.

Is grid a particularly demanding game Loadsamoney? Id have hought that furmark extreme burn would be a pretty strenous application that would show up any issues.

my 4870 had exactly the same as you show in the pics
was the memory i was told when it was rma'd

oh it it would only do it when playing LFS and only in the menu for crysis

May have to look into an rma, im hoping that xfx's support and rma procedure is up to scratch.
