Is my PSU about to go pop?

The last time I used my machine it was fine. The only audible noise is my GFX card if I ramp up the fan. I switch it on today and it sounds like a jet plane ready for take off! I take the side off the case and the noise is definitely coming from the PSU, like the fans are spinning twice as fast as they were.

The PSU is a Thermaltake Purepower 680w. Is it about to go bang or what? It's probably about 3-4 years old I think.

Could just be the onboard fan controller that's decided to break down. Some of the older ocz units used to do this. It could also be that the unit is overheating for some reason. Check exhaust temperature and psu case temp after some loading.

If it's under warranty return it.

If not you could do a fan swap and gave your motherboard or a fan controller modify the fan speed as necessary.

Just noticed that this psu is dual fan type. You'll need to determine which fan, or if both is the fast moving one. I can't imagine that a dual fanned psu would be quiet though, not ever.

Computer was stone cold and the noise is constant even after post/boot.

I'm running a Q6600 @ 3.0ghz with 4gb OCZ gold Ram. GFX is a 260gtx 216sc.

Couple of WD hd's 750gb and 500gb plus around 4-5 120mm fans in an Antec P180. It's been fine for the last couple of years with Zero problems. I've had the mild overclock on the cpu for the last 12 months and the GFX card is at stock. It's looking like I'm going to have to spend some pennies, the noise is unbearable even with my headphones on!

Edit:::The temps in the case have got cooler, I would imagine because the fans (both) are blowing at full tilt. Even with Two fans the PSU was surprisingly quiet.
