Is my Sky+ box faulty?

Hey guys,

I got Sky+ multiroom for my birthday in September and to be honest I’ve only really just started using it to record stuff :)

Anyway, the last couple of things I’ve recorded have appeared to be a bit dodgy during playback… Today I recorded Only Fools and I’ve just finished watching it; well the bits that played okay? The picture was fine but the audio was very iffy – I had none at all in some places :(

The last thing I recorded before that, a film on one of the movie channels from last week, had more or less the same problem, but it was concentrated to just 5 minutes in about the first half hour of playback?

Another thing I noticed was the live pause thingy didn’t work when I needed it during the week! I was watching a match and the phone went, I went to pause the TV and all that happened was the ‘pause logo’ appeared briefly with the picture in the background still going… the screen eventually went blue and the program info bar came up, but there was no pause – I resorted to switching the box off a couple of times and that seemed to fix it?

It was annoying that it didn’t work when I wanted it tho

So, do you think it’s faulty? The unit is an Amstrad.

Cheers,

SW.

Try a full system reset or a planner rebuild,

Services

0 - 1 -select (won't do anything untill you press select takes you to an installer setup menu.

Two options are at the bottom.

Or you can do a hard rest, unplug the mains hold in the left and right arrows plug it back in, you should now see lights iluminated on the front of the box, press the select button twice.

This will delete everything in the planner.

Or phone sky and do a System Health Check.

When phoning sky if they book you an engineer tell them it must be a brand new box, within 90 days replacement. As if they don't book it right, you will end up with a refurb unit.

Which Sky+ box have you got?
Sky are still supplying one of three:

Pace
Amstrad
Thompson

From what I'm reading on other forums the Pace is the most reliable and seems to have next to no issues.
The Thompson sits in the middle whereas the Amstrad boxes are just generally problematic.

mine went like the probs you are having and low and behold about 6 weeks later it was much worse, was told to do a system update by pressing buttons on the front of the unit - this then killed it completly. i rang sky and had to pay for an engineer call out of £75

What? How can they do that if it's not your fault

What's the situation now, did they replace your unit?

Touch wood, it hasn't done it for a while... I was using Live Pause a lot last night and it was okay, plus I watched a 30min recorded Simpson's and that played back fine :)

I haven't got round to trying any of your suggestions yet either?

Same issues with my amstrad box. In the end i called sky and got them to replace it with a pace unit. All sky cancellations dept people have the discretion to send you an engineer and replacement box for free, so make sure you ask and insist that it doesnt cost anything.

yeah i had to pay for the engineer who came out and said "thats dead" and got me a new one out of the van. unit was only just 12 months old. even said i would cancel sky+, sky multi and full subscription so they said fine they would cancel it. not impressed cos i been a customer for 4 years

Which dept were you through to? Ive never experienced that and i have had multiple free callouts on old boxes which have been miles out of warranty and sourced myself, and likely have a lower monthly spend than you if you have multiroom. They have never even questioned it, i asked for it to be done for free, and it was done.

Very strange.

Yeah go through to xc (turnaround) if your out of warranty and if need be xc your account, you can always re-instate it if need be.

Good luck trying to get anything other than Amstrad soon, seen as Mr Murdoch now owns Amstrad!
