Is New Years Eve a big thing in France?

I'm heading to the south of France on the 30th December until the 2nd January. I think we're staying in the Dordogne Valley (or somewhere around that area).
What I want to know is do the French celebrate new years eve? Is it a big thing? I'm led to believe that we are staying in a medium sized village in a valley so I don't know exactly how lively it will be.

Any ideas? Are there any towns or cities around that area which are known to be lively on NYE night?

Ta :)

They celebrated it good up in the alps a few years back, but that might just be because its touristy?

Not spent new years in the south of France, but loved the Dordogne in the summer.

Cool. Is there much to do in Dordogne? We're hiring a car so getting around shouldn't be a problem.

I guess depending on where you are in the Dordogne area, they might be doing stuff in the larger towns like Bergerac, Perigueux, or Sarlet. The Dordogne area is absolutely lovely in the summer time. I know it can get very cold during the winter time though, so wrap up warm!

Read some article in the Independent today about France and New Years Eve, this group in Nantes wants to stop 2007 happening or something

No the french don't celebrate new years.....

I imagine it will be just like Home unless you are in the ass end of no-where.

Freefaller would be the man to ask this, however I'm not sure he's about tonight as I've not seen him posting.
