I'm almost there, but i've lost a little bit of confidence in my upgrade after reading a few things.

First off is that there are two new chips just around the corner from AMD & Intel and the last time this happened to me it was the duo core that i missed out on for a 939 setup, i don't want to make the same mistake again.

Although it wont be as bad, i just wonder how the introduction of these chips in the next few months effects prices and market trends.

Also the new 800GT has put the cat amongst the pigeons, and now there is talk of a redesigned GTS & GTX. If so its all going to change about again.

All that plus the fact Vista still isn't settled i'm just wondering if it was worth my while to back off until after xmas, possible end of Jan before upgrading, what do you think?

People will say that if you keep putting it off, you'll never upgrade. I've had the cash to upgrade for a while, but since I upgrade rarely I'm determined to hang on for the next big leap in GPU performance, which is looking like meaning after Xmas. I'm hoping that this will also mean I can overlook the currently lower Vista gaming performance because the new cards will win out through brute force.

I think you shouldn't hang on for newer components tbh. I upgrade my CPU every 2 years in Oct/Nov with what's best at that time knowing it will last the next few years easy. Sure, within a few months you won't have bleeding edge technology but you won't have mid-range stuff either. I have just upgraded from a 4400+ to Q6600. The 4400+ is still a decent processor two years after I bought it.

So everyone thinks i'm just being over cautious? :D

Fair enough, i just got stung big time last time, and i want to get my own back on the market to even things up. ;)

I still think i might wait until the new GPU & CPU are out in force, and people know where they lie in the scheme of things before taking the plunge.

If the new AMDs are near Intel, I might stick with them, i just don't think they will, or if they are, you'll be paying more.

I don't think you can go wrong with the Q6600 (go) at the moment tbh.. This will keep you going for a few years yet regardless of what's round the corner. Stick it in a P35 mobo and a 8800GT and you'll still be be flying this time next year and beyond, which is the main thing.

Q6600 go
Gigabyte P35c DS3R
2GB GeiL 6400
8800GT

Is what i'm thinking, the mobo allowing for the new CPU's and DDR3.

Should keep me going, but then i'd need a new PSU & probably Vista to get the best out of it, big money for me for it to be worth nowt 6 months later like this lot. :(

Yeah, it'll still be respectable 6 months from now. It won't be the top of the top-end, so to speak, but it'll still be darn good. You certainly don't NEED Vista. What's your current PSU?

400w Antec.

Its solid, but under powered.

It was my plan to get the mobo/cpu/mem now, and hope the PSU will power that and my 7800GT till after xmas where i'd buy a 8800GT and a new PSU 550w+

I'd say just upgrade now. The next technology is always just around the corner and even then when its released you have to wait some time for it to become truly affordable.

What spec do you have now? Unless you're running single core with less than 2 gigs of ram and are stuck with AGP I don't see a reason to commit to a major upgrade yet.

3700 SD 939
Epox 9nPa+ SLi
2gb DDR Dual Channel GeiL
BFG 7800GT
XP

Never overclocked.

I suppose i could have a bash at doing that finally, and if it goes **** up i only ruin about £100 worth of stuff rather than £500.

If you're interested in playing Crysis at high resolution and with maxed out graphics, don't upgrade yet unless you're happy with 20-35 fps

Is that all that upgrade capable of? :D:rolleyes::eek::confused:

:(

Christ on a mountain bike, maybe i should think of an Sli board just in case i get greedy.

If you're going to wait, then make sure you'll actually do it on that date. There will be new tech just around the corner then, as there is now. Otherwise you might aswell upgrade now.

Well if you'd bought a GTX at release this wouldn't hold true, because it's been a year and only now is something 'just round the corner'. If you buy new gen tech on its release you are effectively maximising its useful life, assuming you don't buy every new increment of performance improved hardware that comes on the market.
