i am in the market for a hdtv, i have found a 42" plasma tv for 800quid but ihave been told that the screen will get damaged from the on screen displays on sky and bbc channels. Is this correct? and what type of screen would i need so as not to have this problem?

It certainly can be an issue with plasma, especially when new. I read of people use a running in period of low contrast. Some makes are worse than others, Panasonics are supposed to be pretty good. LCD can have issue with blurring on fast moving images. And then there's DLP based rear projection TV's which don't suffer from any screen burn, it's physically impossible.

I got really scared when some "heavy" burn appeared on my Panasonic 42 plasma following a Telewest error message left on all day by mistake.
This was particularly since the web is full of "advice" as to how its there for good.
2 days later it was gone!

Older and lower quality Plasmas, might suffer from burn in. However New/good quality Plasmas are supposed to be far more resistant to it, and should be able to reverse it after something like 48 hours TV time if the image is not present.

I will be going plasma when I get the money, unless there are some significant LCD/projector impovements before I can get the money together (well at the current rate anything is possible)

Just playing some Fast Moving/Colour Changing Films etc for the same ammount of time the image was being burned usually sorts it!.. :)

eg: if the SKYOne Logo has been burned into the screen for 5 hours just put a cuple of 'High Octain' Action movies on (for 5 hours) and it should be gone!

Screen burn doesnt happen on good plasma screens, you may get screen retention but as others have said it will go after a while.

I have never had retention on my Panny screen, its on all the time and lots of that time is on kids chanels, sky, football etc with DOGS.

Used to game lots on it, 360, cube, ps2 etc and never had an issue with huds etc.

Mine was properlly ran in and so far so good.

surely ,you would think, if channel logos cause this kind of damage/problem the broadcasters would
a:do away with a pointless (IMHO) advertisement i mean come on we KNOW what channel we are watching FFS
or
b:make the logo much more transparent so that it doesn`t `burn` the screen so much
just my 2p worth :)

so if you had a max of £1000 for anew telly inc a stand what would you go for?
plasma or lcd from what i have seen i can either get a 37 in ( lg ) lcd screen or a 42in plasma (hyundai)

I had a nasty case of "image persistence" on a LCD from the Sky+ paused symbol, drove me nuts.

I constantly tell my other half to stop leaving the sky+ on pause all the time as im worried that it leaves a "nasty mark/image" on the new £1500+ Plasma.

Prob just me paranoied, but then i paid for it.

I have a pioneer 436, the wife and daughter have been watching cbeebies during the day and I can now see ghost of the channel logo. According to advice I have to leave it on a snow screen over night for a week. So far its been 4 nights and so far i cant see any difference.

Are you sure that every time you leave it on snow overnight, your daughter doesn't then watch cbeebies during the day? :p :D

lol, we found out that bbc2 shows cbeebies channel from 8-10 and bbc2 does not have any logos. 3 more days to get rid of the shadow with the snow screen . If it does not sort it then I'll be finding out how its going to be replaced or fixed.

My mate has this plasma TV and definitely has screen retention issues. He hasn't managed to permanently burn an image to the screen, but he cannot play his Xbox 360 without part of the HUD showing for the next 5 hours or so. He ran the screen in on low contrast settings for 200+ hours and always plays in Game mode, but always gets some image retention no matter what. If he watches anything with a logo for half an hour he will have that image for say 15 minutes or so. He is gutted as it is such a lovely looking TV and the picture is just stunning, but he is a gamer at heart and worries each time he plays a game :(

so if i bought an lcd screen would this not be a problem?

They do not suffer from burn as much as some plasmas.

Pioneer had a dodgy patch with retention and they say they dont have it on the latest 436 models. Panasonic dont really suffer from it - mine is on lots and i have never had any retention.

That would explain my mates 436 having problems, he got it pretty much as soon as it was released. Do you have any links to discussions about them sorting them out? I am sure he would be very interested to read them.

have a look at www.avforums.co.uk, there has been some one who has managed to get a replacement for a 436.
