Is the Asus N56U still the best router or is there something better?

Ash, have you tried different channels? Maybe the default one on the 56u is clashing with a neighbours?

Get the app "inssider" to see what other wifi networks are broadcasting in your area, and then choose a channel which they are not on.

Very difficult to actually find a channel that isn't in use. Remember most wireless channels overlap and there are actually only 3 that don't overlap with one another.
Currently at home I use Channel 11, however I can see 6 other wireless networks and they are on such various channels that I'd never be able to get anything "totally clear". Thankfully I'm not having issues, but finding clear wireless space is more or less impossible.

True, but you dont know whats what, without looking!

Most networks arent necessarily transmitting and receiving data anyway so he might be ok with some overlap. But not at the moment obviously, unless the channel isnt to blame.

So did that..

This is the result. My network is the Ash's Network_2.4g (5g won't be found by this lappy.. too old)

Edit: I should also add. I connected up my hard drive to the router, then tried a transfer and I'm getting 3.8 MB/s transfer speed?

Sounds like your doing a wireless transfer so it's probably limited by that, my speeds quoted were via ethernet.

Enjoy your new router anyway, chuffed with mine.

The whole point of this router for me was fast wireless speeds?

My issue is from lappy to lappy over wireless through the router.

You will get decent wireless speeds depending on your environment and wireless cards. As a general rule you get half the actual connection rates speed maximum.

So if my laptop was connected at 144Mb/s then I can expect around 7MB/s transfer rate. If you are connected at 300Mb/s then expect around 14MB/s transfer rate, this is best case scenario however.

To get higher speeds still via wireless you will have to invest serious pennies in a N66U and high speed N wireless cards for your machines (ie 450Mb+) with multiple antennae.

This is ridiculously slow though. The router is in my bedroom and I'm literally 3m's away from it, yet I just did a speed test and got 0.08 Mbps.. and then another with was slightly higher. This afternoon it was "decent", now its horrendous again.

Wheres the 0.08Mbs speedtest from? Have you tried a file transfer between two wireless devices and to/from the NAS with a very large file ie 3GB+?

Yeah, tried a massive file, photos, all sorts. I've given up. DSR time. I reconnected my old router and voila, it's super fast and everything works. Shame seeing as I wanted the other features.

To the post above me, tried them both, no difference.

Shame you waited until post #25 to mention that your using a older g class wireless capable device.

Could have told you just to connect directly to the router or a wired switch and stop all this faffing about sooner. :)

large data file transfers from wireless devices to network storage is not going to be "super fast" How you quantify "super fast" now that you have reverted back to your "old" router... is beyond me :)

Something must be up with your configuration, because my wireless performance is nowhere near as bad as yours and my n56u is in the roof space above me. Are you connecting to the 2.4ghz network? The 5ghz is slower compared to it.

Superfast in comparison to barely being able to access the internet and taking forever to load any page. Also, I tried both bands, using various devices. Maybe I have a faulty router or maybe my house has some very solid walls. Regardless, I've gone back to the old one and it's so much better.

Also, I should add. I tried to transfer a file from the hard drive to my lappy using ethernet and I got speeds of 1 MB/s. So suss that one out.

Yeah, I connected to 2.4g. Tried both 2.4 and 5g using another phone and spare lappy and same issues. I'm sending it back. Might be my specific example but considering I spent 6 hours trying to get the think working is just silly especially when my other router was much quicker.

Sounds faulty to me, if even the ethernet is horrendously slow, mine gets 80-90MB/s on most transfers via ethernet.
