Is the i7 860 a rival to the i7 920? Discuss!

I've been sitting on the fence now watching the progression of the newer Intel I7's e.g Bloomfield and Lynnfield.

Its accepted that the 920 is a formidable chip pushing the 4-4.5ghz boundries on decent cooling and its one of the main reasons why such a chip has become so popular.

With the release of the new i7's on the lynnfield skt im starting to think theres a real contender to the 920's throne.
While the 1156 skt is a new tech and the 860 now being adopted by more users theres some interesting results popping up.

The 860 is now starting to be thoroughly tweaked and tested and results are springing up now showing that its clocking just about as well as the 920.

I know im looking forward to the i7 860s with a even further reduced TDP and hopefully a tweaked revision.

The 860 seems to hi 3.8ghz very easily so im only including examples above 3.8ghz

Half Way down semi stable 4.4ghz on air
4.6ghz unconfirmed stability
4.4ghz but with HT off
4.2ghz with HT

Whats your thoughts and opinions?

As you see in the 3d advantage score the i7 860 still falls behind the i7 920 on cpu score. I had same problem go i7 860 or i7 920 and im glad i went i7 920 works perfect for me.

When the 920 and 940 is discontinued tho your looking at £300+ more for LGA1356 processors alone. You missed my point tho that intel may produce the chipset but theres nothing to stop manufactures bringing x16/x16 to LGA1156 unless Intel have some legal document to stop them. In which case I donno if such thing exsists

Any links for when these chips are to be discontinued?

A P55 with an NF200 chips cost way more than a X58 MB so is rather pointless.

People seem to overlook that the next upgrade to 1366 will be around £500 for a cpu.. i see a lot of people down the line wanting to upgrade but cant afford the cpu prices.

Theres a 750s and 860s which has even lower TDP then the normal 750 and 860 but dunno if theres any other revisions to them. Sandybridge is the next real leap.

Possibly a 3.4mhz-ish stock i5 on the cards too start of 2010

If there is sufficient demand for budget 1366 chips Intel will supply them. There has been no official pricing from Intel so far, and price estimates @ £500+ are pure speculation. Intel wants to retain and build it's premium customer base, not force them into maintstream or competitor parts.

Still there is no upgrade path for the 1156 (plenty of new CPU's but all downgrades on the 860), but there is for the 1366. And all latest intel road maps show the 920/950 around till atleast the end of next year when Sandy Bridge is supposed to be realsed.

I normally run at stock speeds so I went the 1156 860 route for a cooler, quieter experience & I normally keep my machines for about 4 years so when the time comes to upgrade completely new architectures will be available anyway.

No they won't. The only people who will be "demanding" budget 1366 chips will be enthusiasts looking for the next bargain to overclock, a la i7-920.

The i7-920 was only there to offer low(ish) entry point into the Nehalem platform until the mainstream LGA1566/P55 platform arrived. Now that's here, the LGA1366 platform will be for servers and enthusiasts whilst LGA1156 is mainstream. I see no incentive whatsoever for Intel to produce low-cost processors for the LGA1366 platform.

+1 vertigo1

I have to agree with vertigo on this.

If 1366 we're assured to have a cheaper more maintstream option i'ld buy 920 straight away. But as it is there should be plenty fo room for the 1156 platform for a while and when the "860s" version arrives with lower TDP I might change to that.
