hi guys, i have just brought a 1997 bmw 328i se today but i cant tax it till tuesday when my insurence cert comes through. the previous owner decided to reclaim the tax just before i got it, does the law allow a few days when theres a change of owner?

I doubt a few days won't hurt IMO. Just don't use it.

I'm not sure, but I don't think you can tax a car in the same month its declared SORN. Overheard a post office clerk talking about something similar during the week.

EddScott your sig's filesize is a litle too large (maximum 20KB), just did a bit of compression for ya if you want to use it.

dad never recieved a tax reminder through post never noticed for 2 weeks went to post office she asked if car was off road, and gave him the disk as if he bought it 2 weeks prior.

but no auto fine or all that rubbish from tv, maybe she was just a decent person who realised people make mistakes. something to many of us are forgetting these days.

'd be a bit peeved buying a car from a dealer without tax.

Admittedly I've only bought 2 cars from dealers and both I went for 6 months tax. Both agreed.

I know people who haven't bothered or plain forgot and nothing happened to them.

Thanks mate. I'll change it now. Struggled to get it that small in the first place and still be able to make out what it is LOL :)

No grace period. And the idiots won't let me buy a tax disc until my insurance comes into force - which is midnight tonight and I need the car for use monday  I have MOT, I have insurance certif, but no, they won't let me buy tax.

No wonder so many people don't bother.

Tis a problem, worst thing is, most police databases are out of date anyway.. before I could take the Mini, they had to have a cover note to retax it before I could drive it off, and tbh, unless you had trade plates or had it delivered, you shouldnt of drove it..

Not a millisecond of grace.

I left mine a day (stupid) and got wacked by the full force of a £40 fine.

to avoid getting a letter from the Continous registration guys in glasgow, get it taxed ASAP... they also make you pay arears.

Going to drive the car today and get it taxed tomorrow , as it is monday tomorrw and i have all the forms ready to get it taxed.

you are allowed one day's grace that is all

Edit : saying that you could end up with a nobby policeman and get a penalty fine

i scanned in my old insurance certif to my PC and OCR`d it.
changed the reg and dates on it and reprinted it out and used that to get my tax when my insurance company forgot to send my new policy out when i changed car.
they only look at the dates and the reg when you get your tax ;)
not a legal thing to do, but hey i was insured for the car etc etc just didn't have any thing on paper to show post office to get the tax and couldn't wait till they sent out a replacement, as i was off on hols up Scotland and needed the car.

Yeah it can be a right pain. Last time I got mine, my insurance ran out on say th 27th of January, but I was in the post office trying to buy it on the 25th. "Oh no sir you can't have it as when it's valid from you won't have insurance" Fair enough but to arrange the new cover and get a cover note meant I had to drive a day without tax and eventually get it on the 2nd. Chap in post office reckoned you had upto a months grace anyways ie before you got an auto fine, just don't get caught by an ANPR in the mean time.

The chap in the post office sells stamps and sits behind a counter talking about letters for a living. I would not trust a word he has to say on taxation.
