Somebody who thinks something is a great idea, but would never actually participate?

I am having a mind blank at the moment and am sure theres a term for people like that, a bit like NIMBY (where people don't want something built near them even if it benefits them).

Does anyone know what this is?

Cheers

I love the NIMBY attitude.

Eco Town to be built near you. NO! NIMBY!
Wind Farm to be built near you. No! NIMBY!
Free porn centre to be built near you! No! NIMBY!
Free houses for all to be built near you! No! NIMBY!
Free money pit to be built near you! No! NIMBY.

Looks like all green towns and green power must be built out at sea or in Wales.

Hypocrite? Idealist(in that recognising it will never be achieved so have no chance of participating)? Idiot?

And not that it really matters much but NIMBY is technically an acronym.

What I am referring to is to do with my dissertation.

Results I gathered showed that over 30% of really wealthy people said living in Social Mix housing areas was a good idea and they would consider it, but only about 9% of them did.

9% of the 30%, or 9% of the origonal sample that said they'd consider it? Because to me, if 30% consider doing something, and then 9% of the origonal sample do it - thats not saying they'd do something and then not doing

9% of the 30%

Even if it were of the total it would still only work out as 30% of those that said it was a good idea.

I'd have to agree with GeX, that isn't hypocritical unless you can prove that they had the option to live in socially mixed housing with all other factors being equal and they then chose not to.

I'd probably approach that along the lines of "a much greater proportion of wealthy respondants consider socially mixed housing a good idea than actually live in it". Idealist is probably closer than hypocrite here but even then it isn't quite right as they aren't saying in ideal circumstances they'd live in socially mixed housing, they are merely saying they'd consider it.

you can think something is a good idea and not do it though. i do see what you're getting at mind.

a touch egotistical maybe, they answer saying its a good idea because thats what they think they should say, even if they don't beleive it themselves. unless you had really clever questions that allowed you to get these results without outright asking what they thought (if that makes sense!)

It does sound a bit vague. Considering that fact that they said they would consider it rather than saying that they would definitely do it suggests that they may well have considered it and decided against it. Thats just freedom of choice. If they had said that they definitely would do it and then didnt, then that is hypocracy, yes.

I didn't have particularly clever questions, I just made them quite open ended and sent them to a lot of people so I gathered a lot a useful responses without specifically asking that question.

I do think there was a touch of 'I should say this or I'll look bad about it though'

Closed questions generally give you a clearer answer as to an individuals belief although you need to give enough choices to cover any position.
