Are there ever going to be any more Space Sims?

Well I used to play Wing Commander and Freespace etc and loved them.

Recently I have not seen one new release or a future game that will be a space based fighting game

I really love these kind of games but are they ever going to be doing new ones? My lovely Joystick is going to waste only playing BF2.

I assume you bought X3 as thats pretty much the lastest space sim you can get.

Elite IV is being listed in a few places for pre-order with dates late this year. I'll believe it when i see it though.

Yeah i have seen X3 but seen lots of peeps say its got bugs etc in it and to wait a while to get it so there are some patches out. So anyone that has got X3 is it nice and stable etc now?

Yep it stable now, just make sure you patch it. Great game

its not strictly a space sim but have you looked at galactic civ 2, its out this week.

Go back to Freespace 2.
Except use the SCP, and play Derelict & Inferno.

give freelancer a try, its old ish now but still good fun, plenty of online playing too.

X3 in my opinions a terrible game... i just cant understand how they can make a game look so pretty and control so badly, the games interface is horrid, the instructions may as well be written in german and the tutorials a joke.

as for darkstar one.... it looks crap

you could have easily built that game on a DX8.1 platform and no one would have known the difference

Freespace 2 is free now, you can also get a new spangly 3d graphics mod for it.

There REALLY needs to be a new Xwing Vs Tiefighter.

I've been playing Freespace 2 of late but I've run into horrendous stability problems. I'm using the lastest CVS builds and the 368delta MPs, and basically the game keeps freezing up or encountering a problem after a few minutes on my current mission. I've tried a few different builds but I can't seem to get the game to be stable.... might have to try using fsopen 367 and downgrade the media packs I guess but it's a lot of effort.

Ahmen. One of the best, if not the best Space Game[tm] ever. That's not just the Guiness speaking. Eve is good though...and where is the new Elite for the love of God?

Dont use the CVS builds, they tend to be unstable.
Use the last official release, or the release the latest media VP`s reccomend.

You might want to turn off a few effects on the VP`s also, as some of the textures are VERY high res and might be bogging your system down too much causeing the crash.

The release the latest VPs recommend IS the CVS build

They don't work properly with the latest official release supposedly.

I went back to 367 with earlier VPs, and then upgraded again to 368cvs and latest VPs. This reset a few of the options I'd enabled before and (hopefully) things are looking a bit more stable now.

As for the effects, I think the 3d shockwave in mv_adveffects is the killer, as when a cruiser blows up it decimates the framerate down to under 20fps. Large textures is also a bit of a no-no as that can see peak commit charge hitting 1gig.

No surprise.
The HLP community went over the top with quite a few of the effects and textures especially.

Cant complain though, its giveing an already great game a new lease of life.

Agreed. The thing that annoys me at the moment is that space games seem to be mouse-controlled these days rather than joystick for that arcade combat feel. It's a shame as space combat games like X-Wing/Tie Fighter/Privateer are my favourite genre in PC gaming.
