Is this a bit steep for new front brake pads?

So pads say £40, plus mark-up would be £60 at most, an hours labour at £80 at most being in the south.

Anything over the ~£140 mark for front pads is officially dear I'd estimate. 'Tis a BMW dealer though, see if you can make it back on the complimentary coffee...

Bartley BMW in the Totton area were extremely good with my old BMW. Really knew their stuff and prices were fairly cheap. My current lady sends her 325i there.

Worst prices ever. Their oil services are actually more expensive than at the dealers for my car! And their Insp 1/2 are about the same price.

Plus their wheel alignment is £132. I got mine fully weighted, with a KDS 3D aligner for £70 at a specialist.

Seriously, you can do so much better than them. Specialists are meant to provide the same quality service but at 2/3rd's of the price. "Bartleyuk" seem to be the same price, if not more, as BMW Main Dealers, and comes with none of the advantages (BMW stamp, free coffee, Wifi, hot receptionists).

This is why I often cannot be bothered with indys. They think that because they can put 'BMW Specialist' after the name they can charge bonkers money. It probably works for them but I'm not going to put business their way unless they are significantly cheaper.

They are charging £5 less for an Inspection 2 on an E39 than I paid a BMW main dealer, and the BMW dealer chucked in a box-fresh 10 plate 320d for the day!

2x BDS5966 - Vented Brake Disc (Each) - £32.24 - £64.48
1x BPS2410 - OES Brake Pads (Set of 4) - £24.54 - £24.54 (fronts)
1x BPW0535 - BMW Z4 (06-) Wear Sensor - £5.70 - £5.70
2x BDS6436 - Vented Brake Disc (Each) - £22.08 - £44.16 (rears)
1x BPS2605 - OES Brake Pads (set of 4) £18.54 - £18.54

Goods Total = £157.42
VAT = £31.49
Total Order Cost = £188.91

Oh, and I have assumed Vented all-round. Rear Solids are cheaper...

2x BDS6410 - Soilid Brake Disc (Each) - £21.09 - £42.18 (rears)

It's true that some places put BMW specialist in the name when really they aren't at all, but it's easy to find a proper BMW specialist as they are often highly regarded (ie. near me, i've heard lots of good things about Darjac Racing, PMW and others).

Also the difference between a specialist and a dealer is that a dealer is all about the money and are well known to try and fleece people and not really act in the customers best interest. However, the specialists i've been to really look after you and are genuinely trying to do their best for you because their business rides on their reputation and they can't get away with the same antics as the dealers do.

Wow. The dealer have let me supply my own oil before. I wonder if they'll do the same with parts?

No, because the parts wont be BMW Approved. The oil is. The only BMW approved brake parts are the BMW ones, even though we all know they are rebranded examples of far cheaper parts.

Actually the dealer margin on the parts it not as high as you'd think - they probably pay more for the BMW branded parts than you'd pay for the equivilent at GSF.

Used them myself many times. If you want to find out the particular brands, you can call them up and ask giving the part numbers I quoted :)

Not replaced the brakes on a car of that age, but I am willing to bet that mechanically speaking there is little to no difference to when I did the same jobs on my E34s a few years ago! So, one afternoons work, at a reasonably gentle pace :)

I called BMW Sheffield today and they quoted me 235 pounds for the front pads on the 335i which is way too much so I booked it in with a local company (http://www.newhallbmwspecialists.com/) for 110 quid.

Should I use any specific pads? I thought about changes the discs to after market discs but decided its not worth the bother.

I wouldn't even bother with a BMW specialist, changing the front pads on a BMW Z4 is not a specialist job. Most monkeys with a set of spanners could do it. Find a recommended local mechanic or find a friend (or maybe someone here) who has some basic tools and an hour free.

Have you tried haggling yet?

I needed to replace 2 rear springs on my GFs KA. Rang Ford and they quoted £90 each, just asking knocked it down to £59 inc.

My mate needed a new battery for his S2000 and was quoted £85 from Honda, asking dropped it to £50.

The only garage i have used that won't budge is my local Mazda dealership.

I had my front pads done about 1 month ago from a local BMW/Audi Specialist on my 530D.

Pads replaced, worn sensors replaced and fitted. BMW OEM pads and sensors etc. £120 inc fitting.

Car was done and back to me within an hour - spot on job.

Local dealer wanted £215 for the same job.
