is this good for a starter guitar?

Pacifica

Squire's have their gooduns and there badduns, it's one of those things you've got to try before you buy in their case.

This guy knows his stuff.

Yamaha Pacifica 112s are awesome guitars for not much money. Strats can be either nice or hideous, with the majority being the latter.

I'd try on out in the store and make sure if you like the one you tried you buy that, not one from the storage room which is a different one, as no guitar, even if it's the same model, is the same.

ide save your money, go try some out in a shop, and once you know a brand that suits you (there ARE differences, believe it or not :P ) spend the money on ebay then :)

Agreed.

I dont have a girl to buy for this xmas and I am thinking of buying a guitar. I have played the piano and organ for over 30 years so can read music very well. Have always fancied learning the guitar so will give it a shot. Have a few lessons etc.

But the yamaha Pacifica is a great guitar, won all the awards for best guitar under £200. I am pretty sure I will get that one with a nice £80 Marshall Amp should do me to start out with. See if i like playing and learning a guitar. The guy who demo'd it to me said he couldnt play. Well If this time next year I can play as "badly" as him i'll be very very chuffed with myself. :)

You get what you pay for.

Squire Strat`s are know to sound crappy.

So no, not really if your going to seriously take it up.

Complete tosh.
I can take you to two local bands where the guitarists prefer their Squires over their Strats. One band is a Stevie Ray Vaughan tribute and he's got two SRV's on stage but plays his second hand £30 Squire instead.
When you get a good one you really get a good one.

Spot on. But that's why the OP needs to try them out (ideally with someone who can already play) in a shop to try and find a good one. Getting one off ebay will be very hit and miss.

I also picked up a S/H Squier for £70. It honestly does sound better than my £550 USA Strat. It's a cracking guitar.

The Strat isn't great though, which it should be.

I used to have a friend whos father had a Squire Tele. He said he'd owned loads of guitars over the years. Gibsons, Fenders everything. He used to have a Fender Tele but he just kept coming back to his Squire tele. And now it's his only guitar. He's had it like 30 years and he still plays it and loves it. So it's true, if you do get a good one, it's really good.

Just a shame that they can be quite hard to come by these days.

The word is inconsistent, some are far from crappy :)

As with most decisions like this, try before you buy... I've bought some guitars straight from the shop wall and the staff have looked a me in a funny way when I tell them not to bother getting a packed up one from the storeroom, with some you can tell straight away if it's for you or not :)

my first guitar was a yamaha pacifica 112, and i still love it even when I now own a usa fender strat!

Thats the guitar (Yamaha) I think I will be getting in next 4 weeks or so. I fancy learning and that seems a pretty good one.

If you are going to try out some Squires, take someone who knows what they are doing with you. Chances are you wont notice things such as bad intonation and string choking, so get your friend to give it a test :)

I've been playing 20 years and I don't know what string choking is.

Squier Affinities are pretty poor tbh. Not bad value, but a bit more gets you a lot more. Squier Standards are a much better option IMO- especially the limiteds. The new Tele Customs are particularily good, I reckon.

My favourite guitar is a korean Squier, lovely guitar. The electronics were rubbish but they're easily replaced. I got it as a part-ex against my Gibson SG, and far prefer it, put it that way.
