I got a letter today... and basically it says

loan requested £3282

grant entitlement £2700

net amount payable £5982

this mean i have £2700 to help pay for accommodation and stuff for my first year... obviously the loan for £3282 will be straight to pay for the course yes?

If you applied for a tuition fee loan then that will be paid directly to the HEI.

Otherwise the money has been sent to you for whatever purpose you need it for.

Unless of course its a tuition fee grant in which case it is for the course.

You will receive £5,982

But all fees are now payable post graduation now that top up fees have come in, are they not? I'm not sure, as I'm about to go into third year and as such I'm on the old system.

iirc basically you have the £3000 for tution fees,

the £2700 is what looks like EMA grants, or a living cost loan

i havent had my loan form back yet though

I would imagine the grant would be for the course fees, but as it has all changed this year I am not sure.

I had an invoice from the uni for my course fees last year and it had something along the lines of:

*large amount of money (can't remember)*: Grant from SLC
60pounds: Paid by you

So they SLC paid all but 60 pounds of the fees with a grant. Not sure if this is any help...

Well the way I understand it, all the money will be given to you. It's then up to you to use it as you need to. I'm sure you can now apply to extra loan to pay off tuition fees so maybe you should look into that so you have a bit more money to spend on accomodation and living costs.

no idea..
i just applied for as much as i could...

i just think i wont see the course money which is £3000 a year.. which would be the £3282 bit...

id of thought that bit i wouldnt see...

do i have to pay back the grant money?

i was going to say...

from my n00bish education so far on loans i think i pay back the tuition costs with is £3000 a year for 3 years.

the extra £2700 in grants (which it clearly states) i shouldnt have to pay back...

but no doubt im naive

which would re-enforce my idea that you have an EMA loan for living costs, wheras i believe im loaning another £3000 a year for living costs

edit - yes i think im right

this year everyone can apply for a £3000 a year loan to pay for tution fees
then if you are in a "low income household" then you can get up to £2700 that you dont have to pay back
if your not from a "low income household" then you can lend another £3000 for living costs

loans are increased if you live in london

If that was the case I would expect you would have a higher loan. I get £3000 odd loan and I can apply to get an extra £1200 for tuition fees (I just missed top-up fees because I started last year). So I'm assuming there's a similar system for you. I'm also assuming that grant is because you're from what is considered a low-income household, is that right? Most people don't get grants (you won't have to pay it back afaik).

yeh, i live with me mam and she gets 10k a year.

which is probably why i get that grant

Did the letter have a table on it saying:

Tuition Fees

Course fee amount - £xxxx
Less grant for tuition fees - £xxxx
Maximum loan available - £xxxx
Loan requested - £xxxx
Loan to be paid (to college/uni) - £xxxx
Amount you need to pay - £xxxx

Maintenance Loan

Basic Loan - £xxxx
Plus Loan (income assessed) - £xxxx
Less assessed contribution to living costs - £xxxx
Maximum Loan Available - £xxxx
Loan Requested - £xxxx
Loan to be Paid - £xxxx

The "Basic" (non income assessed) part of my loan was £3305.00 which is what everyone should get.

Tuition fees can only be up to £3000 a year so I don't think that will be your tuition fee loan.

When I got mine I got a letter saying how much loan I was getting then the next day I got another letter with the table I listed above detailing everything.

Any tuition fee loans will be paid direct to the university - you do not see it.

I believe the same happens with tuition fee grants - they get paid direct to the university.

Anything you get in your bank account is yours to do with as appropriate.

My loan this year is still 'Awaiting Assessment' ... can't recall how long it took last year, but oh well.

i have no table...

just a letter telling me what i have

and if my bank details arent corrent i have a little slip to change them and send it back off to them

You'll get another letter soon then, I had one with a slip to change details before I got the one with all the info on, the first one didn't have anything about a tuition fee loan but the second one lists everything.

Why on Earth do students get grants AND a loan?

It is getting ridiculous now...
Most people don't get grants. Also you have to remember tuition fees have just had a huge increase.
