I would like to know if what I am asking is possible
I have an old Sony handycam that uses minidv tapes, I have no way of getting the recordings off the tapes because the software is not compatible with w7 ( please see my link below )

What I have managed to do is get a minidv to scart cable and im now able to play the tapes from the handycam to my tv.
I know I am able to connect my laptop to my tv, so is it possible for me to stream from my handycan to tv, then use someting like vlc or something of that nature to record what is on the TV when the laptop is connected via hdmi ? ( or does it not work like that ? )

no because your hdmi cable is laptop out not in, you need a dedicated card or box thingy to do this, they are expensive
