Is this too good to turn down?

I have been asked to recommend a laptop for a friend with ~£500 to spend. Doesn't need to be a high spec gamer, but obviously the best she can get for the price is desirable.

I've seen a Samsung R540 (Intel Core i3-370M 2.4GHz, 4Gb, 500Gb, DVDRW, WLAN, Webcam, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit) for £530.

Is this too good to pass up? (I'm way out of touch with laptop specs, so any advice appreciated).

She's not really sure (it's her first laptop/pc believe it or not!), I'm guessing web browsing and email. She does have a couple of games consoles so it's not inconceivable that she may want at some stage to use it for games.

check battery life, if you're getting a laptop you don't want to need it to be plugged in all the time. I'd personally rather take a hit on the performance to get better battery life but thats me

I think the idea behind the laptop as opposed to a desktop is more just to save space. I can't really see her using it on the go, so it will most likely be plugged in.

My view is that the higher the spec the better so that it will cover her for whatever she decides to do with it. She's left the decision pretty much up to me, so the more bang for her £ the better.

well it might be worth asking her what she thinks is more important, battery life or performance, you never know she might actually want to use it away from the wall, snuggled up on the sofa or something.... not everyone wants or needs a performance laptop.

I appreciate what your saying. I'll read between the lines and assume that you think it's a decent enough, well specced machine and see what she thinks about the battery life.

well it doesn't list a gpu so that likely means it's the built in intel one. If it's for games then thats no good really, might be worth looking at an older c2d with a decent gpu perhaps....

Although dell (as much as I hate their desktops) do occasionally have some decent laptops.

i checked samsung's website, it has a ati radeon 5450 onboard, not a basic intel. well from what samsung's specs said anyway...
that graphics card should be capable of some form of gaming
