Do any of you lot have York products?

I want to go to a well-known catalog store and get some weights. Nothing fancy just a decent bar + some dumbbells. Seems a lot of the stuff there is by this company "York". Is their stuff any good? Im clueless about fitness gear when it comes to brand quality etc. At the same time I dont want to spend a lot of money.

If you have any York gear would be cool to hear from ya :D

Thanks :)

A decent bar + some dumbells + enough weight to actually do something with it is not going to cost you next to nothing.

Look at how much weight you get with the cheaper dumbells, barbells, benches, you get so little that it's next to useless from the very start.

I have a set of York adjustable weights. Hardly ever use them because, esp when using the dumbbells, they're just too big and unwieldy - even at low weights like 2.5kg. Also screwing and unscrewing the weights between routines is a right pain in the arse.

I would invest in some proper non-adjustable dumbbells rather than York adjustable ones. They make variation of exercise a right pain and can weaken your motivation.

Stuff like that is usally over priced imo. You might be able to pick up and olimpic bar and a good set of metal weights to go with it at a good price as the weights should last for ever :) Don't know much about dumbells tho as most will break if you drop them all the time (some people after every set). Try just google for dumbells or ask in the sports section on this fourm ;)

Lol thanks for the responses - in the end I know they are just metal :D

I guess I should have been clearer!...from the pics I see online it looks like some of their weights have a plastic "shell" around the metal weights? Im guessing those wont last long and crack and stuff. So maybe best to stick to the metal-only weights without that covering.

or ask in the sports section on this fourm

Doh. I forgot about that subforum!

I'm guessing you mean York Fitness.

Wouldnt use them myself, have in the past and they really do build them cheap. My barbell bent and had a noticable bow in it after a while.

I would recommend these guys:

World of Health & Leisure

Pretty much every weight under the sun and considering what they are shipping the shipping costs are very reasonable.

Or you can use gumtree and the like to find people in your area who are trying to get rid. You can usually pick up a bargain here, but obviously there's no gaurantee of quality.

The large plastic weights actually hold concrete.

Whats your goals and budget exactly?

I had one of those york sets when I was 13 or whatever, with the threaded bar and spin on caps. It took for ever to change weights and I quickly out grew it. Looking back I would have got a second hand olympic set, power cage, adjustable bench and sturdy pullup/dip tower. But that would come out to over £1000 and need some room.

You quickly find that you need a bench.
Then you need a squat rack
Then you need dumbells
Then you need a cable machine for pulldowns/pushdowns/rows/facepulls/etc
Then you might as well join a gym
Then you discover there is a quite low point of diminishing returns without extra hormones, and no amount of equipment changes it, and grinding away your joints with heavy weights in order to look like a mid level gymnast at best is largely a waste of time for most people. You can get pretty strong though.

You say about a bar, but is there actually decent space in your house to use it? Fair play if so, but if you are thinking about keeping fit, it might be worth join a gym if you aren't a member already :)

Im a full-time member of my sports centre & I do a bodyfit class twice a week - its a brilliant workout. I also do other exercises which adds up to 7hrs/week. No offence to any gym-goers on here but personally I found it really boring. I prefer those big group classes with instructor hollerin @ us lol.

The thing is Im addicted to working out now and feel like I want to spend some time at home doing it as well. Ive got a pullup bar which is great but I really like the weights too.

BTW Im not looking to become a ripped MMA master or something lol. Just want to blitz belly (reduce waist) and get some "tone". So far down to 38inch waist from 40inch.

My house is small but I have a massive shed and a phat storage area under the stairs where I can keep the stuff. No room for a home gym but I can manage a bar and dumbells! :)

Give over with this **** again, what you are saying is simply not true. No we don't all have the genetics to look like Arnie, but anyone can make a significant change to their body without ever needing to touch what you're suggesting.

Just stop giving advice that is factually inaccurate, it continues to make you look dumb and the danger is someone will believe you at some point.

Don't bother, just do weights at the gym. If you can't be bothered to do it there then no hope you'll do it at home, it would be a waste of money :£

Decided I wont get a bar - unlikely I will use that at home. So will just go for a nice set of dumbbells.

@ Morba - I hear ya (you do have a point, must be £millions in unused home equipment in peoples houses!) but honestly wouldnt mind playing with the dumbbells. They are simple kit and Ive set up a full-length mirror and everything :D. Just wanna give it a 30 to 40-min blast on the weekends! (Im at sports center Mon-Sat)
