Just a quicky if anyone can clarify whether you can self study for IT certifications such as:

MCDST
MCSA
MCSE
Comptia A+
Comptia N+
Comptia Security+
Comptia Server+
C|EH
CISSP

or whether you need to attend some form of classroom based study before you can book the exams in a certified establishment such as Prometric or Pearson VUE?

Only reason I ask is I have some free time before doing my dissertation for my Masters Degree and feel like doing some studying for certifications but without paying the ridiculous fees for bootcamps etc.

MCDST I did in without studying at all - very easy if you have good experience of Microsoft Windows XP.

Get a few test exams and see how you do is the advice I'd give.

Aside from the last two I have knowledge of all the qualifications listed, and a lot of other industry recognised ones. Except maybe manufacturer specific qualifications I can't think of any you can't self study for.

Just got my MCAD member pack this morning with a lovely shiny badge.

I can recommend Pearson Vue, good place to take your test.
