IT Jobs - The best?!

Hey, im currently a student studying a HND in IT and will progress onto the degree for Software

What are the best jobs in IT, what do you work as in IT and how much do you get paid etc...

At the moment im looking into IT Consultancy which pays about £46k a year, seems good, any other IT consultants that know what this job requires, is like?

Save yourself the bother, retrain now as an electrician, plumber or something else.

i would say a developer is more what you should be aiming at, doing something like programming or web design/development you can start off low and work your way up through oppotunities which come your way.

Consultants are usually your experienced guys who know their stuff and you get paid a lot to be one in some cases.

on the other side support is where everyone starts, anyone can pritty much get into it.

im in the same position as you but im not setting my goals so high lol, ok so guys say i come out of uni with a I.T foundation degree with a cisco CCNA qualification and i want to be something like a network engineer would this be possible?

I've just turned 26 and earn close to £75k as a permie Principal Consultant. I've not got a degree but I am very good at what I do and have 10 years experience in the sector.

Storage and Virtualisation consultancy is the way forward I tell ya!

Holy No Swearing!! That's impressive.

Yeah you must be really good! to have been a consultant at 16! and you dont even have A-Levels! Im jealous

Whatever you do pick something you like doing else you'll hate your job :)

I've recently gone from a general kind of support role to a more specialised area doing the things I like doing and I've loved it.

Haven't read most of the replies but depending on your CV and if you don't mind working in London. apply to some internships (to start with) or grad schemes for investment banks - they're clambering for decent tech guys.
I did a 3 year degree straight after college then joined a bank in July at the age of 21, no experience (bar some freelance/part time stuff), and I earnt, including bonuses, above 42k this year.

46k straight out of uni is doable.

Storage and virtualisation are very big at the moment, good area to be in. Looking forward to our SAN implementation this year since it'll be great experience, will have to take the consultants out for a few lunches and and see if they've got any opening ;)

Back to the OP: I think the trouble with some of the replies is that you talked about "IT Consultant" as if it was a specific job, it's not, it's a general umbrella title for a whole lot of things.

I've talked to so called "consultants" who were no more than a salesman with a paper qualification but on the other hand we also employ a network consultant when we do large projects who totally earns his keep and can practically name his price.

Best uni course/job/way to get into this field? :)
