It's a MINI adventure...

So I dropped the 530i off this evening at my local BMW main dealer for its MOT (A month early.. just incase) and some warranty work.

And I left with... a 2006/56 MINI Cooper with half leather.

I've only done 15 miles in it, of which 13 were with a passenger who probably wouldn't take kindly to total hoonage so for now you'll all have to make do with first impressions.

It feels... suprisingly cheap. Some of the plastics are what you would expect from a BMW product, solid and nice to feel. But unfortunately, far too many of them are cheap and nasty. Ditto switchgear - it's quite odd, half the switchgear feels excellent - I particularly like the old-skool flick switches for the windows, DSC etc, but some of it feels absolutely awful - the indicator stalks are just cheap and nasty. It also has an annoying rattle coming from somewhere. It is 2 months old.

The ride is... quite firm, as it's a Cooper on 17's. I've no idea whether this means it handles well yet as throwing it around will come tommorrow, but for normal driving, its quite annoying. It's joggly and doesn't feel planted at speed. You do 70mph and it feels like its going a lot faster - people who moan about 100mph being an insane speed must all drive MINI's.

The performance... is suprisingly poor. I was expecting it to feel quite decent - it's a Cooper so it apparently does 0-60 in 9.1 seconds, but this is not what I have found. It feels very gutless and slow so I would imagine you have to absolutely cane it to get the best from it - I'll report back on that tommorrow.

So, it's totally rubbish then? Well no, not really. It does have its good points, and I would imagine people not used to E39 5 Series probably wouldn't have commented on most of the bad points.

Whats nice about it? Well, it certainly looks funky for a small car and the interior is retro-tasticlly cool. The big speedo, cool rev counter pod, half leather seats - it feels nice. It's a nice place to be, as far as small cars go. Most of my criticisms apply to other small cars in equal or greater measure - Corsa is a light year more nasty in every respect - so I really need to be careful I'm not drawing most of these criticisms by virtue of the fact I stepped out of a 530i and into a MINI Cooper. Interestingly, this car feels no 'newer' or no 'older' than mine - quite interesting given this is 2 months old with about 1k on the clock yet mine is almost 5 years old with 140k on it.. you'd say they were a similar age/mileage if you had to guess and didn't know about BMW styling.

More info, and pictures, tommorrow.. But so far, I'm not keen.

You could compare it to a Corsa, in which case it'd win by a mile. Alternatively you could compare it to a something the size of the old Focus, but with a foot chopped off of the boot (so it's only big enough for a handbag). Then it's not so impressive, especially at the price.

does it have that horrible squeel on full steering lock? a few of my moms friends have had mini's, and all reported the squeeling on full lock. Ive also heard numerous mini's in the works carpark with the same problem - its awfull.

For the price, i can think of better alternatives.

Was a similar experience when I had a test drive in a mini cooper park lane, the leather seats seemed especially plush but the plastics were very nasty.

The main thing seems to be that cheap plastics etc are fine if the car is cheap, but the mini certainly isn't (the park lane is about 15k!!), the quality is really no better than my fiesta which was thousands of pounds less, with more upsides e.g. more powerful, which is why I plumped for the fez in the end.

All MINI's do this unfortunately, apart from the One D which has an electronic power steering system. :(

That fault seems to be a fault that develops with the steering rack(there is a new revision of the rack but that still fails). BMW will change it under warrenty but on my friends cooper it kept coming back(3 racks in 2.5yrs). He loved it though but decided to sell it for that reason due to the warrenty coming to an end.

My sisters selling her Cooper S. She's sick to death of bits falling off it, bits breaking and its just general crapness. She's also sick to death of the fuel consumption too (I enjoyed saying 'told you so' :D )

I know what you mean about the quality of the interior, the indicator stalks just spoil it completely.

The power is what I'd expect from the performance figures, perhaps the 530i has spoilt you a bit..

But I do still like the mini.. I've borrowed on on numerous occasions, and had the Cooper and Cooper S with the Chilli pack.. very entertaining handling, and it at least feels different with the switch gear etc.

I am not the biggest fan of the E39 interior, for me it looks a bit dated, where as the mini feels upto date but still retro.. certainly it appeals to a different 'market'

I didn't realise Mini's where that unreliable, but one girl I know bought a 3 year old cooper, and the gearbox has an annoying squeek, and the steering rack is on its way out, I didn't realise that was the norm!!

Sorry but even some of the latest "proper" BMWs have cheap and nasty plastics in the interior. I've said it before and I'll say it again - BMW interiors have really gone downhill with the latest generation of cars, I'd take the interior of an E39 over any of the latest ones.

I have driven a quick tuned cooper S....

They are a hoot to drive and you have to say, a great looking little car... Thieving B's BMW are..

:D

Next time your in the dealers, get something interesting for a loan car, please.

Sorry but, I just hate the "bastardised" BMW Minis. :(

Before you all jump on me, a Mini is a Mini as in the only real sucess ever to crawl out from BL / Rover.

Don't like the "real" Minis much, I can't fit in 'em! :o

The thing is Mini's always had crap build quality. When they were built by Austin and Rover they were cheap so you kind of expected them to fall to pieces. Now BMW build them people expect them to be rock solid, which they should be considering the price they charge.

mini build quality sucks, they rattle, and the dealers suck. They are expensive, the engine on the current model is made in brazil now its a BM job so maybe not so many mechanical faults

But Fox........get it on a country road and let fly and you will be grinning from ear to ear. I have to agree with the cooper being gutless, I found the diesel more fun to drive personally . It also has a garrett turbo!

Nice cars, like my mates cooper s however the weakest link is the dash and build quality, some of the plastics are so cheap its shocking!

never driven one but i suppose they should be ok down a back road.

So do you have the one, or the s, because i've heard that the s is a pretty nice car all in all, whereas the one is a gutless version that just looks nice. Although i've not driven either.

Jesus i'm retarded tonight, yeah so you've said sorry I should have read. Well anyway i've heard the s is a nice run around compared to the one, but not sure where the cooper slots in performance wise. Although I don't actually have any hands on experience.

I do my driving lessons in the MINI One Diesel, no squeeking on full lock :p

My dad has an Audi A6 and you are right about the quality of the interior has a plastic feel. As much i like the Mini, that indicator stick is made of the kind of plastic you see in water pistols. No too keen on that, it could've been made much better for not much more. For the money they charge you think it could be slightly better.

That said, I like how i drive around town, even on a dual carriageway it's fine (in my limiting experience).
