Got myself a new car :D Its a mk3 R-reg golf gti.
The plan was that mum would sell her old civic and use my golf, then add me as a named driver when i get home from uni so i can drive it to work (will hopefully have a job by the time im finished uni). Then she would take me off as a named driver when i start uni again next year. However, she phoned her insurance company today and they wont touch me with it :( (19 yr old - no NCB as i used to drive the civic as a named driver.)

Im not completely stupid, i did get some insurance quotes before i bought the car. The best quotes were £1050 TPFT and £1390 fully comp. The prices were not as high as i'd expected (considering i have mates driving rover 400s paying nearly 1000) so i didnt think it would be a problem with mums insurance.

Basically, what i want to know is the best way of insuring myself to drive for the 3months that im home. I have a part-time job in glasgow so i can afford insurance during the uni term if i really need to, i dont want to risk leaving it in glasgow  and i wont always be guarenteed a parking space. Anybody have any ideas?

Pay monthly for your insurance then cancel at the end of the third month?

I can't say I'm suprised. I've heard insurance companies are starting to flag up people who drive say a 2003 Audi A4 then want to insure a 1996 Clio with their 17 year old son as a named driver.

In the states you can cancell insurance at any time. It is usually bought in 6 months terms but you can cancel it at any time without penalty.

Is it not the same in the UK?

Not really, the first payment is usually 2-3 times larger than the rest, so cancelling after a month or two is a waste of money. :(

www.ecarinsurance.co.uk? best quote for me by far 1400 quid for an integra at 22 with 1 year of license no NCB give em a try, they do pay monthly to i think.
A little OT but they just gave me a pretty competitive quote - inclusive of breakdown cover it's only £1 more than my quote from my current provider and £8 more than than the best quote I've had this year. Not worth the one pound to change, but...

the first payment depends on the age, when i was 19 i payed the same all the way though. but when 17/18 had to pay 200 up front and not pay my last 2 installments.

That could potentially be expensive, you'd have a huge cancellation fee.

I found with More Than when I cancelled my Focus after 7 months I got back £355 for it. Thinking I paid £820 originally, that isnt bad I thought!

18,ncb, 1.4 fiesta zetec 04 plate.

Most quotes around 1.8-2.4k

bell insured be full comp for 1300

Picked it up today, driving back down to base tomorrow in it.

Try Norwich Union as they stipulate when you insure that a student can be either:

+ Living at home
+ Living away at University

I think they assume that they'll just use it for little bits when they're home so you get a great quote :) Quote for me and my Mam on her 2002 Ford Fiesta 1.25 Freestyle came to about ~£250...something like that anyway.

Hope that helps! :)

BeatMaster :D

You'll have to phone up for this one and ask about cancellation fee's some are only like £20 so find one that is cheap and go with them.
