Its official Canon 600D

Lol, that what I thought about the 40D, guess it's what your used to.
Have you actually held or used a 550d (or similar) with a grip?

I have, not fun, worse for the illogical nature of the controls. I'm a Nikon user but from the time I've spent with them it's immediately obvious the 50D/7D/5D are much much nicer to handle than the 550D, grip or not. It's a functional beginners body but it's not to be confused with the semi-pro line-up usability wise.

*smug*

You do realise that bar from a few minor features like 'micro-adjust' and high fps burst, it's practically a 7d?

All this talk of the 60d being more comfortable than the 550d is just nonsense. Some people will prefer the handling of the 50d/60d and others will prefer the handling of the 550d. I have 'lady hands' :p so the 550d felt better than the 60d particularly in terms of weightiness.

I would have preferred the lcd on the 50d/60d, but just couldn't get on with the size of the thing. I get backache as it is, and couldn't cope with another gram of weight!

You are kidding?

You need to man up :p

EDIT: On a serious note, I noticed the weight increase when I switched from 40D to 5DII but at the same time when you carry it around with the 24-70L and a flash on for an entire day you are definitely going to notice it. Not once would I have ever said the 40D is heavy though :)

Isnt the 60D's body smaller than the 50D's? I swear that I read that somewhere.

To me I find it rather annoying the Canon keeps bringing these XXXD bodies with very minor changes, the only noticeable change on the 600D is a swivel screen over the 550D.

Even being a Canon user I prefer how Nikon are doing things by releasing camera which is actually better than it's replacement taking the D3100 and the D7000 as an example.

The ability to fire remote flashes like the 7D and 60D is a pretty good one too.

At the end of the day, the money is in the consumer market these days, that's why release them so often.

I assume the 600D will be around the price of a second hand 40/50D. Ignoring video (as I'm not that interested in video when I want to learn to shoot stills) how will the 600D stack up against the 40/50D?

extensively. Along with practically every camera up to that point from 3 years before it, I was the manager of a camera shop for ~3 years.

It will have a better sensor image quality & better screen.
The 40d doesn't have any advantages that I can think of, but the 50d has micro adjust and maybe a few others.

The swivel screen, remote flash, and digital zoom (maintaining HD) in video mode are selling this a little for me.

But perhaps most importantly it's slightly wider, taller, deeper and heavier than the 550D - which apparently improves the handling, one of the most common complaints. I hope this is priced competitively because it could be a cracking little camera. :)

"This top-down view reveals that the 600D is also a bit deeper, front-to-back than its predecessor, again due mainly to the swivel screen. This adds about 3mm to the depth of the grip, which may not sound like much but improves the handling to a surprising degree."
dp-review.

Edit:

Much more here about the handling improvements...

Well it will probably be 1.5-2x more expensive than a used 40D.

I haven't even bought a D-SLR yet but nearly went for one of the 40Ds on TP yesterday.

Maybe gald I didn't as this one could be a cracknig camera. My main grip with the xxxD range is their size and horrible handling. I just hate holding one because of my extremely large alpha male hands!

:D

If you have huge hands then maybe, but not for most people.
For instance when comparing my gripped 550d to my friends 40d like you had, the gripped 550d was much more comfortable imo.

The main problem with un-gripped small bodies, is you can't fit your pinky on at the bottom very well, which is then solved with a grip.
Also I prefer to carry a lighter camera.

I had the 500D so lightly different, but my brother has the 550D gripped. I actually agree, with the grip the 550D is a nice camera to hold. I really don't like the 7D with grip that much, especially after having a 1D. The base of the grip is just too thick and uncomfortable for me. I still use it though, as it does help with portrait shots and working with larger lenses.

The big drawback for me is the controls, when I had the 500D I was plenty happy. However I just find it so annoying to use now, the lack of the wheel on the back is such a pain. You get used to what you have I guess.

You see this a lot, the 550D has the same metering I believe and offers the same (and more) functions in video if you're into that. It obviously has an 18MP sensor but it is not the same (18.7 million V 19 million detector sites in the 7D), the AF is superior in the 7D, larger body, better handling\controls, better build, environment sealing, Pentaprism, 100% viewfinder. So more than a few "minor" differences".

I looked at the 550D after selling my 1D3, as the specs are great and it is a decent little camera. I just couldn't go back to the handling\controls.

My colleague has a 450D and I have big hands, doesn't bother me but then I've not used one for any decent period.

It does sound like the ideal camera for me thus far, but I'm not shy of picking up a 2nd hand 50D. Best get some research. I keep spying on the TP classifieds too, but keep talking myself out of it.

I'm sure once I have a camera in my hands the small downfalls will be forgotten whilst I start from the ground up, but being a techy person I like to buy the best I can. Probably been 2 years and I've still not bought a bloody camera.

You keep thinking this and maybe one day a 550D might magically become a 7D ;)

And yes I've used them side by side, the 7D is a MUCH nicer and better camera, even if the sensor is 99% the same.

On a side note, WANT that 200-400mm F4!
