It's too hot :(

my flat mate has today been on about buying a portable AC unit for his room
how much juice do these things use? a couple of KW/hr? if so that about 35p+ an hour... there will be no more easy 50/50 split on the leccy bill!
 
30C isn't hot? You must be one of them coat wearers when its 20+ outside. :P

My windows been fully open since March. Radiator hasn't been turned on since it was installed 6 years ago. :D

Unlikely to be that much, it's a rather simple solution, just get a metre plug and you can see how much it draws, many even allow you to enter the price you pay per kWh and it'll tell you how much it's costing you.
 
I've got two types of portable AC, they draw between 1 and 2 KW when the compressor is on, so if its really hot and the compressor is on all the time, it can use a fair chunk.

One tip to is to get a unit with an inlet and outlet pipe, if it's much colder outside you can pop the inlet pipe outside which makes it much more efficient.

Depends, its not too bad in the rooms on the North side of the house at the moment though starting to warm up a bit in mine with a decent spec gaming PC going. The rooms that are facing the sun though are boiling even with windows open.

This, i can cope with considerable heat but humidity absolutely kills me, that's why the AC unit is so good as it dries the air as well as makes it cool, sure i have to empty the AC unit of water every couple of days but it's a small price to pay IMO for being way more comforable

Indeed, work for me is going to be hell tomorrow, busy hot saturday with terrible humidity in the kitchen area..

On the plus side at least my area manager and chief of operations are in so i can kick up a fuss about things since my manager is too much of a fanny too..
