Hi Motors posters :)

I have a problem.

I've been told by a mechanic my Turbo on my Citroen C5 is gone, and it's pulled through oil into the cat, the dpf and pretty much most of the pipes in the engine....

He said that it would be best to sell it for spares or repairs as I would need to:

Replace the Cat and DPF
Replace the turbo
Clean all pipes of oil
Change the filters

If I am going to sell it for spares or repairs, I would probably sell it for about £500... now do you think I should at least give it a whirl in fixing myself?

I don't really have a means to get underneath the car which is probably going to be a problem... unless I bought something to lift it up? are those things expensive?

is a turbo easy to change? I fixed my Peugeot 206 before (replaced the clutch and radiator) but that was with my dad (a mechanic of 30 years)... he's not with us anymore so it will be my first try alone...

So motors, should I get rid or give it a go?!
 
Changed the turbo myself on my BMW 330d, it's not particularly difficult IF you can get decent access under the vehicle (ramps, lift, pit, etc). No idea how much a recon unit will be (likely sold on exchange of your broken on), but I can't see it being more than £300ish.

You could always rid yourself of the DPF at the same time.
 
I have a dpf sitting under my desk here waiting to be returned today - I may try the turbo myself and if I can do that, maybe we can look at the rest? :) (changing the dpf and cat)

my main concern is cleaning the pipes / filters... how difficult is that?

I don't have a lift / pit or anything like that... do you have any suggestions? I have a double garage if that helps ;)... With all my dads tools :p
 
Second hand turbo and cat from eBay, take them to an indie mechanic and instruct him to also gut the DPF. Or get a second hand DPF too. There must be parts available?
 
I wouldn't be gutting DPFs any more. MOT tests will soon be a lot stricter on diesel emissions and they will actually test if the DPF is working as it should be. There was talk of ordering garages to hand over the details of cars they have already done as well, so they can chase them. Since it's actually illegal to remove them now.
 
Before changing the DPF try cleaning it.

A boost pipe had broken on the missus Qashqai and had been duping a load of carbon into the DPF actually blocking it causing the car to not even start up for more than a few seconds.

With very little knowledge but happy to get my hands dirty I managed to remove the DPF, poured some Coca Cola (seriously!) through it and left over night, then ran some DFP foam cleaner through finishing off by jet washing and leaving to dry overnight.

Worked a treat! Unblocked it and running well.

I know maybe a bit different with oil involved but worth a shot.
 
Not worth it. You can pick up a C5 without problems for £500. (I assume yours it's an old model with it valued at £500, spares or repairs)

Could get another one and use the knackered one as a donor.
 
When my petrol turbo car chucked loads of oil down the exhaust i simply changed the turbo and the oil burnt off after a hard drive.

You will be taking all the turbo inlet / outlet pipe off anyway so those are easy to clean, intercooler can be a little more trouble, but i suppose you could flush loads of brake cleaner through it.

That's reassuring... I still have to convince the gf that I should do this though... :)
