Ixus 60, 65 or 800IS?

I currently have an IXUS v which was one of their first digital compact and has done me proud for over 4 years.

It's 2MP and takes great snaps if you're reasonably careful.

Now the problem is my wife isn't careful and a lot of photos are ending up blurred which I can live with for holiday photos etc but we now have a 6 month old daughter and you don't get a chance to revisit their youth so every photo is precious to me.

Added to that the fact that 2MP won't blow up to A4 particularly well unless you get a lucky shot. So I think it's time to move on.

It's definitely going to be one of the above 3 cameras so please no recommending other brands, wifey is familiar with the Canon and changing make will set the photos back not forward.

The snap time must be quick, the blurriness comes from the fact that she hears the click and moves the camera which is invariably still taking the photo.

I realise the 60 and 65 are more or less the same camera, I suppose I'm asking if it's worth going up to the 800IS, is the image stability stuff worth it? Will that slow down overall snap time?

Is the loss of the viewfinder on the 65 annoying for anybody that's got one? Or is the screen so much better that it easily compensates?

God, I'm reviewed out so real opinions from people that own the above would be appreciated.

Cheers, Andy

I'd probably get the 65. The screen size would really make things easier, and you'll not miss the viewfinder really. The blurring issue is something you can resolve by teaching your wife how to use the camera properly! IS isn't going to help if you move the camera a lot, it'll only help with small movements.

i have the 800is and love it. Ver wife friendly, and the 35-140 zoom has just that little bit extra.

Yes the screen is only 2.5" compared to 3" on the 65 (I think), but i think the IS and the extra reach make up for it.

All straight out of camera with nothing but a resize,

Cheers so far, I think the extra zoom would be nice for me plus the 2cm focal distance (as shown in cmt's pics).

I'm sure the IS can only help the Mrs.

cmt, an odd question but does the camera make a noise when it starts the photo or when it finishes?

I think the biggest problem with the IXUS v is that it is noisest on starting the photo and no matter how many times I tell Mrs B to wait until the led flashes before moving, she assumes the noise means photo done!

Cheers, Andy

the first thing i do with any camera is 'mute' all of the sounds.

The camera make a noise as it focuses (not very loud at all) and the usual 'click' as the shutter opens and closes, but nothing compared to my old Ixus V.

Plus the new DigicII processor makes processing shots a lot quicker.

Live in Worsley and work in Wilmslow. I take it you're in Stalybridge or is that wishful thinking ;)

yeah, in stalybridge.

I was going to suggest you having a play with mine or letting the mrs have a play (800is that is :D),

But its a bit of a trek.

Ooh er, thanks for the offer but it's my daughter's christening on Sunday so need to order it online today really, want to get photos in 6MP shake free glorified loveliness.

It's good to hear from someone that's gone from an IXUS v to an 800 though which is exactly what I'm doing.

I bit the bullet last night and bought the IXUS 800IS, I already have a 1GB card in my phone so can use that for now until I find a good, fast but cheapish 2GB card.

What swaed me in the end was the optical viewfinder (65 doesn't have), the increased zoom and most of all the IS.

I went through some of my 2000 photos so far on the IXUS v and looked at how many had been spoiled by camera shake and it was getting on for 30% and I certainly can't blame all of that on the wife as I'm the biggest user by far.

I'll post my thoughts when I get my hands on it.

is the pic of the church the one near tesco?

have the ixus 55 and have played with the 60 and 65
all quite similar, the extra zoom on the 800IS and the IS would clinch it for me
very happy with canons, until the battery looses a bit of power and the flash takes longer to charge

Full review coming after a weekend of shots but so far very very impressed with the 800IS.

Image quality fantastic on auto settings and screen is brilliant.
