Been having a browse around on autotrader this afternoon as im looking to get a new car. I currently drive a fiesta zetec-s and am looking for a bigger car with more room thats comfy for cruising but handle well and has a decent turn of speed and a decent size boot. My budget is £6k. Anyways after looking around at various options like mondeos and volvo s60's i hit across the jag xtype 3 litre v6 sport. Does anyone know much about these. From what I can find out they are basically the mondeo st220 wearing a jag dress.

In terms of overall package they seem really good and well specced.

Anyone owned one or know anything about these jags or can suggest anything comparable for the same budget?

4wd might be one of the differentiating factors? I dont know how good it is on the X tho.

IMHO the ST220 looks better too, the X-Types that are tarted up look like they have crappy splitter bolted to the bumpers, makes the car look lower to the ground but thats about it.

the basic interior is a bit plain, but the touchscreen sat nav makes it much better. I had an auto and it drank fuel like no tomorrow. I often averaged 17mpg. Mind you, I drove it like my hair was on fire :D

I really liked mine, nice and smooth, quiet and quite refined.

And forget about the mondeo in drag thing. The x shares the same basic chassis, but not really much more

Well the Jag certainly has a feel of higher quality, whether it actually is or not is a different matter. From behind the wheel they're very similar, but then you'd expect that really. I can't comment on the 3.0l Jag but the 2.5l feels pretty much exactly the same as the mondy. Unless you really want the Jag badge you'd be better saving some cash and getting the ST

I would imagine you will get a better ST220 for this budget.

I really like the st220 but after searching on auto trader the ones at that price within 100 miles of me seem to be absolute nails of really high milers like 90k plus.

That is 1 nice car for the money, imo it looks nicer than the St220, which i know youve looked at, the St220 looks like every other Mondeo on the road, this Jag looks stands out a bit and again IMO looks classier.

Id be concerned about the Jaguars service and maintenance costs though, id expect they would be much higher than the ST220...

It's not terrible if you go to the right places, but it's never going to be as cheap as on a mondy, even if it does have a whacking great v6. I'd look round your local garages for ones with a good reputation and find one that does Jags.

Assuming you don't use a Jag main dealer why would they be? The hardware is the same except for the 4wd system.

Well from what i can see a mojor servic on one of these cars is £280 from a main dealer.

And you expect to find minter low miler X Types for £6k?

Erm yes, there are plenty of low mileage examples within 20 miles of me. Nearly all come with fsh. There just seems to be a lack of similar quality st220s which is a shame.

Fox, the jag X-Type are pretty easy to find with lowish mileage in the petrol variants. I have seen some real bargains.

Reasonably expensive to run but not fubar.

The st220 isnt boring my friend, its just that there arent any close to budget anywhere near me lol.

yeh fair enough, it's just literally on everything which starts with "spec me a car.." always has MONDEO OMG WTF?! as a reply :p
