If you form your opinion from watching him play rather than looking at a spreadsheet full of stats it's not hard to see he is or was a world class player.

I have my doubts whether he's the type of player that would succeed in the Premiership though and I wouldn't want Liverpool to be the club to take that risk. He's too old, he appears to be quite a disruptive influence and his wages would cause an internal meltdown.

VDV did well for Spurs, cant see why Sneijder wouldn't be a success. Like VDV though he'd probably need the team to be built around him

Brendan knows Gerrard isn't going to be around forever and he's already the wrong side of 30 and no one in the team so far seems likely to take his place and be as effective. Sneijder is 'only' 29 so they could easily get four years out of him and he's never been a 'box to box' midfielder. I could see him doing well playing with Suarez.

Gerrard is dropping deeper and deeper, he will be around for a few more years yet and whislt we do need an attacking midfielder with Shelvey being far too raw and Suso being quite young still I don't think the answer is Wesley. He seems to be phoning it in for the past few seasons (ironically ever since he didn't win teh ballon d'or).

He not been starting.

He has strength and pace and if it means egghead wont start thats ponly a good thing

£8 million is not a bad punt when his club wanted 15 million euros and 18million off spurs last season.

Remy has done nothing to make me think he will be anything other than average. £8m is not muchin the PL tthese days but I don't think Remy is anywhere near replacing Ba.

I like Newcastle these days, so I hope I'm wrong.

Average is a lot better than what we have ATM

Gerrard doesn't need to drop deeper and deeper, he just needs to be dropped full stop. Yesterday was the worst he's played against us that I can remember.

I know this! He doesn't have the legs to play the furthest of the 3 midfielders, same reason he can't be box to box anymore (he has never liked those 2 roles anyway as he has always seen himself as a CM). It appears that he thinks he can do the "Alonso role", trouble is he is no where near good enough to do that.

BR seems to have his undropables though and until he mans up we will have these disjointed, one dimensional perfomances like yesterday.

Rodgers has got a tough decision ahead of him. If he drops Gerrard and we lose a few in a row the media and the majority of our supporters will slaughter him but if he continues to play our midfield won't improve any time soon.

Lucas has to play and with Gerrard being shoehorned in to the team that means Allen has to play further forward and he's got virtually zero creativity or ability on the ball. I'd argue he doesn't actually offer us anything positive when he plays anywhere on the pitch but that's another debate.

In the end I think the decision will have to be made by Gerrard but I don't see it being made until he's ready to retire. A replacement certainly needs to be found soon though because we desperately need a creative force through the centre.

Maybe Liverpool should have hired AVB in the summer, he'd of had no problems dropping Gerrard

Gerrard's performances over the last month or so have been pretty good and I thought he was very good in the 2nd half of yesterday's game. He's still an excellent player but our issue right now is not individual players in our midfield but the balance of the 3 players that make it up.

I think the calls for dropping Gerrard are nuts. He clearly hasn't got the burst of pace he once had but he's still an excellent footballer and has a lot to offer. The issue is finding the right position for him in the side. I'd give him a free role in midfield to do as he pleases and have Lucas & Allen holding to shore things up but right now Lucas doesn't look fit and after a good first few months, Allen looks shot to pieces.

We're not even being linked with players of that ilk though, just more forwards that can play on the wing.

I'm not convinced that Lucas and Allen can play together, they've had 5 or 6 games together now and I've yet to see any hint of an understanding between them.
