I know this is a long shot... but is there anyone who can recommend some NON-VIOLENT Japanese movies?

The last I saw was "Taiyo no Uta" (starring Yui), which was a great movie, despite the lack of katana's ;)
What else do you recommend?

edit: oh, and no anime thanks.

this is the one I was thinking of, love this one, bit arty though
"Woman in the Dunes" (1964)

"Raise the Red Lantern" (1992)
umm, hang one, maybe that's Chinese :)

does it have to be Japanese ? China did loads more non violent stuff
(lots of countryside epics, imposed marriages, political angst etc)
tbh, they were much better at that kind of story tahn the japs.

There are some suburban jap flicks that are OK, nothing that comes to mind.

-- But back to the excellent Chinese films:
I really liked "Yellow Earth" and "The Story of Qiu Ju",
but a bit slow for some.

"Red Sorghum" worth a look

.

Not to mention its fairly violent?..

I know they're Chinese, but '2046' and 'In The Mood For Love' sound really interesting. I must get round to seeing them.

Well, there's always the classic Rashomon of course, which has no gore or shocking violence [at least, not by contemporary Japanese standards].

Rather wonderfully, I've just discovered that it's in the public domain, so:
please switch off your mobile phone :)

Failing that, you could always watch the first half of Audition :D

I think its Korean but Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring was a great movie IMO and no violence in it at all.

Seconded.
I also love Kim Ki-duk's Bin-jip (3-Iron) but that has some violence.
