It really is different, using your fists is not the way to resolve a situation. A single blow from the nightstick to the back of the legs would have been less offensive and wouldnt have lowered him to the crowds level.

Does he have a nightstick? Can he use it? His hands are tied up with two offenders. His punch worked a charm. It neutralised the threat from the intervening lady straight away. Good job I say.
American cops take a lot less crap and are more assertive than the police here for example. Their job requires that approach though and they're well within their rights and within the remit of their powers to throw a punch where needed.
I do lol at the armchair experts. Put yourself in a situation where you are threatened and obstructed. You have to decisive and assertive.
Nothing expert about it. Yank police would just as easily reach for their handgun.
The thing is, punching someone is more likely to incite others, using the stick is part and parcel of the job.
I can see why it's law in New York. A lot of the roads through Manhattan are 6 lanes across so you'll find yourself very stranded indeed if you decide to cross at the wrong time, which you've probably witnessed people do quite regularly on our roads
Done it in Berlin and got told off, by a dude wearing a green bomber jacket, bobble hat etc. I ignored him and he chased after me, as apparently thats what the German police wear
PS The Punch video - The Cop was investigated and cleared of any wrong doing, so regardless of the many keyboard generals ranting and peoples moral opinions, he was found to be doing his job within the boundarys of US law, end of topic
