Hi Folks

Got a set of these today and was looking at cables to connect into my soundcard.

I have ordered the cable pictured below however, why is the small jack stereo and then the 2 large jacks mono?

I know a DAC is a better solution but running off my sound card for now.

Thanks

The 3.5mm jack carries both left and right channels. The cable separates the stereo into left and right channels; one for each mono jack. With unbalanced connections, you have left, right and ground if it's a stereo jack; left or right and the ground if it's mono. There would be no point in the 6.35mm jacks being stereo jacks, because only two connections are used.

:p

You would use 'stereo' 6.35mm jacks if you were using balanced connection to an audio interface with balanced output; although the jacks are commonly know as 'stereo' they still will only have one channel per jack. The reason is that balanced audio has three connections per channel; positive, negative and ground; unbalanced has two, signal and ground. Balanced is better at rejecting noise and allows for much longer runs of cable.

I see now :) I know a wee bit about audio gear but this was doing my head in!

I kept thinking.. Why aren't the quarter inch jacks stereo as well? lol

Makes sense now.

Tell you what.. They are quite the speakers!
