Am sure you have to put the pump back into its holder for the cashier to put your transaction through...maybe that only applies to the UK pumps?

In the USA (or at least in the filling stations we used), you pay for your fuel BEFORE you fill up.

Although, some guys have probably just got a spare hose thinger and stuck it in the car.. mates following with camera.. for a laugh. So all this petrol station technicality is irrelevant.
