You do know that she wrote tracks before deciding to make it herself?

Her first single was meant for Rihanna, but she decided to do it herself, and good on her, she's wrote for many of the top artists.

I think she's pretty decent, though the "Do it like a dude" song was a horrendous first choice for single but then maybe that was the point as the rest of her stuff is run of the mill pop music though she does have a great voice.

As regards her look, I think that's just another part of the act. There was photos of her at an awards ceremony a few weeks a go and you would barely have known it was her as she was conventionally dresses I suppose you could say and she looked stunning.
