Edit: Oh, and some very useful advice (IMO) is to not use a template for a cover letter, make sure to take the time to write a customised, personal letter to each and every employer you apply for a job too.
I'd agree with that. Gear your CV towards the job you're going for too.

(thought it would be better to resurect a thread on jobs than start a new one tbh)
I've deceided that I wanna get out of being self employed.
I want to get into networking-network admin kinda area maybe working with servers etc but don't know what kind of qualifications to get for this kind of work.
I'm guessing something like a CCNA/CCNP etc but what else would I need to net me a nice job? would I have to start on helpdesk to move up the ranks or can I just walk into a real job?
should I avoid the networking area? if so why?
what would you lot reccomend?

If you want to eliminate the really boring tedious level of IT jobs then you need the A+ qualification, should not be trouble for anyone on these forums really. :)

That then go onto the MCSE/MCSA or equiv. route of qualifications.

I was going to go through and do the same thing, and probably still will at some point in my life.

Several ways you can get into it, but without experience and the qualifications you wont get anywhere, you need both to get a foot in. :(

well I've been self employed for about 3 years now, working for schools, theater companys etc who find themselves without IT people for one reason or another as well as home users, but every time I apply for a job it always seems to be the people with qualifications who get it over me :(
at one point it was down to two of us, he had a RM qual, and I'd been working at the school for the last 3 days (their temp IT guy left and had screwed the networks AV, guess what happened then) and had resolved ALL their issues, but at the end of the interviews they got us both in the room, told the other guy he had the job and told me that it was down to him having the RM qualification (he then proceded to remove all RM systems stuff from the network and replace it with standard kit).

Yeh its the way of the world. :(

You need to get one higher, the RM qualification really means little but whoever was picking thought it did.

I have been in the same boat for 9 months applying for near enough 200 jobs, around here they want a MCSE to answer the phones, literally.

Good luck in job hunting, but a A+ then MCSE/MCSA is the route to take, you can do the A+ in a month if you have the drive to.

what about the CCNA, I can get it cheap (like realy cheap) and do it relativly quickly.

Mind if I ask why?
having no end of work one month then nothing for the next?
the whole doing your own paperwork (accounts) just isn't for me either.

Fair enough. I like not being tied down to a job, having the freedom to just not work if I don't feel like it :)

A big part of being self employed is being sensible enough not to blow the money while you do have it coming in though, I know quite a lot of people who spend whatever they have then if they do go a few weeks with no work are screwed.

Mick.

Maybe look into offering new services? It also helps to try and get a good solid client base.

From what you said you're helping out when people get left in the lurch in some way? Doesn't sound like the sort of thing where you'd get a lot of repeat business (once the companies have someone new working for them?).
