John Carter flop to cost Walt Disney $200m

I'd not even heard of the movie until about 2 days ago and the trailers weren't inspiring at all - might have worked in the 80s but for the most part seemed very immature fantasy - the mainstream audience has grown up a bit in the last 20 years.

looks pretty dull to me - maybe losing all this money will make hollywood concentrate on characters and story now and not special effects, i doubt it though.

It really annoys me when people comment and even try to review a movie without having actually seen it. Basing your opinion on a couple of trailers that do nothing to show off the good side of the film ( believe me none of us who worked on the film could understand the reasoning behind the trailers ) is daft. If you don't think you'd enjoy the film don't go to see it, fine, but don't go bad mouthing something you have no idea of either. If you've seen the film and didn't like it then present some constructive criticism or atleast point out what you didn't like about it.

I know it's pointless trying to argue with people that amount to little more than forum trolls but it's worth a shot. If you don't know anything about what you want to talk about than don't say anything, it will just make you look like a fool.

For those with an open enough mind to get past the trolls and internet bandwagon reviews then have a look at the couple of fan trailers I posted here that do the film more justice than the official ones. Also keep in mind that before the films release the results from audience screenings was outstandingly positive.

I can guarantee that if you've read the books you'll like the film, otherwise the story might be a bit unusual and old-fashioned but go in with an open mind and you'll enjoy it. It's anything but another VFX led hollywood blockbuster, it's got a deeper backstory than most and actually tries to tell a story out of the ordinary instead of a Pochohontas rip-off.

I know how relieved I was when LotR turned out OK.

OK? Only just, too many silly changes such as
the 'retreat' to Helms Deep, the elves turning up there, faramir taking Frodo back towards Minas Tirith, the wraiths looking weak as anything when Aragorn fights them all off on his own on at Amon Sul (the 1978sanimation version did it far better), the ambush on the way to helms deep, the Entmoot result and then all of a sudden loads of Ents (which are supposed to be few in number) just magically appear at the edge near Orthanc, the army of the dead just floating and wiping out loads at Minas Tirith, and it was the men of Southern Gondor who came back to Minas Tirith in the end to rescue the capital rather than the ghosts. And it was Glorfindel who found the company after Frodo had been stabbed not chuffing Liv Tyler!! Argh I hate Peter Jackson!!! And the fact he's now ruining the Hobbit with a fight with trolls according to one of his behind the scene videos?!?! Did I miss that in the book?!?! The chase from Hobbiton was overdone too, I preferred the suspense of the book. One day we may get a decent version!!

Back on topic, I'm quite looking forward to seeing John Carter, looks fun :)

If directors and script writers stuck 100% to the Princess of Mars book (and title) it would have been even more alienating to a modern audience. Sometimes changes have to be made for various reasons, practicality being a major one, length of the film being another. It's impossible to translate a book verbatim onto a movie stage and expect it to be perfect. Some things work in book that don't on film.

Disney Boss Rich Ross Resigns After "John Carter" Loss

Disney movie studio boss Rich Ross is stepping down shortly after the company booked a $200 million loss on its sci-fi movie "John Carter".

In a memo to Disney staff Ross, 50 wrote that he believes the job was no longer right for him.

Last year it was the animated movie "Mars Needs Moms" that lost millions. Disney has yet to name a successor.
