I got really bored earlier so I decided to go and take pictures even though it's dark. Got a few that came out ok, I think.

They've got a bit of a weird quality because they were taken in the dark, and processed a bit lighter - I'm going to go and process them again the other way to see if I like them better. That said, I think they came out alright considering.

On the subject of this, actually, how does one go about taking pictures at night properly? Some of the results I get I quite from long exposures I like, but the lights glaring is annoying. Is it ND filters that stop that from happening? I quite like taking pictures at night, and I'd like to do more of it, so any tips from people who do it more successfully than I would be much appreciated!

I think the layout of the 2nd one is excellent, that and the texture and lighting on the sand.

it doesnt look that dark ;) from the sky atleast. but i know what you mean, im sure you had to brighten up the last one cause of that dark boat a bit. The sky is very bright, a ND filter would help. will you post an un-altered image or two?

You could also try editing the parts separately, sky, ground ect. The other trick is what to use to measure the exposure. If you use the sky you ll get a lot of silhouettes. If you wanted detail in the underside of a boat, then the sky would be blown out. A filter would help this though. Using something like the ground give you more of a balance like youve done. And if you shoot in RAW, you should then be able to get a bit more detail of of the shadowed areas.

Some of them were measured from the boats, some just from the horizon. I was experimenting with lots of different stuff to see what happened - focusing on different bits, playing with the aperture, seeing what I could magic up from the dark.

As for the light, it was literally pitch black - I'll post up the originals of these three later tonight or tomorrow. It's a shame as there's some nice colours in the sky on the originals but you (well, I) can't get much out of them without radically messing with the tone of them like I have with these.

#2 is my favourite definitely.

I really like pictures like this, theres something about boats which makes the composition of a photo stand out a lot more i think.

Also, not exactly C&C but where were these taken?

Twotree Island. The car park/scout hut/boat yard area. Because the tide was out I could get onto the boat ramp to take them. They're looking roughly towards Canvey/Leigh Beck area.

ahhh makes sense.

I cant wait to have a wander down old Leigh with my cam when i come home next and try get some shots like this.

/OT

Old Leigh is really nice for photos, I took this one a week or two ago:

And I've done some more nice ones from down there. The boatyards, cocklesheds, Old Leigh itself, lots of nice stuff to shoot :)

That alley holds many memories:|

so many little nooks and crannys down there which are dying to be photographed.

what camera do you have out of interest?
