Protein is essential for breakfast since your body has been effectively fasting for over 8hrs (take into consideration you eat at 8pm, go to bed at 10pm, get up at 6am, that's 10hrs of no food!!!!).
However, I would include some carbs too. Baked beans, or some oats in yoghurt with some berries, some eggs on wholemeal bread.
You don't need the protein shake in the morning as it's easy enough to get protein in you first thing in the morning with out it.
Even if you're doing only cardio, I'd still suggest some complex carbs.
