Well I suppose they figured they might as well try and flog a few of these given that the panels had already been made for the new iMac.

Alas no current Mac can actually drive this screen externally, and the pixel size means the experience in Windows would be problematic until Microsoft sort out their UHD+ support.

But the screen is amazing; it's just the support for it that's lagging behind at the moment.

I would really really really like this monitor BUT...

It is the same panel as in the iMac retina... for the same price as an iMac retina... with no computer attached to the back of it.

It's a great resolution which Apple have been able to integrate as a single panel... Dell have moved forward with dual-tile input.

The price is frankly absurd for what you get... for £1000 I would be tempted to buy one... but for this price, it's a much better deal to purchase a retina iMac :(

Problem is that iMac doesn't have the GPU to power 5K display, the base M290X is basically just an underclocked 7870 and M295X is just an R9 285.

That and you can't use it as an external display.

You sure? Previous iMacs had that ability, it was a toggle during boot iirc.

Yeah,

Currently no support for using it as a monitor... due to the custom display driver they have built to use it as a single tiled display.

I think it may be a supposed transport-stream limitation... no "external" input controllers yet capable to driving that as a single tile... even if the cable bandwidth can handle it.

Isn't the 5K iMac the exact same screen quality in terms of viewing angles and quality? If this is the case I'm tempted to purchase the 5K iMac and use it as workbench machine and have my gaming PC powering my 1440p as normal. Can anyone let me know?
