just bought a power color x1900 xtx, uh oh 30a on the 12v rail

my question is is my hiper type-r 580w psu up to the job as according to the manual it has 20a on one 12v rail and 18a on another 12v rail. anyone running one of these cards on that psu ?

amd 64 4000+
a8n-sli premium
72 gb + 36 gb raptor
2gb corsair memory

Got a sapphire 1900xt @ over xtx speeds on a 580 hyper no probs.
 
I wouldn't think that most people would like the idea of sticking some metal spikes in their 400W+ PSU :P And with over 20A on the 12V rail.........it only takes something like 2A to kill a person.

I'll have to stop firing up those motherboards on the kitchen table. And that car lighter socket's looking lethal. If low voltage DC was that bad there'd be a lot of dead overclockers around here. But why would you think that?. Die from a 12v discharge?, er no. Ever put your fingers across a car battery at 600 amps? What happens? Nothing. Your bodies electrical resistance is in the 1000's of ohms range. Even if you stand in a puddle and tap dance, it's way to high pass anything but mA at low voltage. Btw it only takes 60mA to stop your heart, but it needs some voltage and it has to get there. 30Vdc is supposed to be about the lethal limit (lowest recorded, but you'd have to be very unlucky), 50V starts to tickle a bit.

And why would you stick spikes in the PSU? Work from the MB header.

I quite happily measure live terminals up to LV 1000Vac with a multimeter, before I'd worry about anything jumping across.

a human can take 100v+, thats why usa/japan etc have that standard.

we are behind over here with 240v and all.

i used to work for a building merchant who hired tools all the time, and its well known in that particular industry that 110v is the safer option(and more expensive).

Static electricity thats visible, like when you take a jumper off is around 10,000v

Humans can take 110v and live, but try that with 30amp and see how fine and dandy you feel lol

Amps is the killer but you need a fair few volts before the electrical current can pass through your body though
 
Am I going to be ok on an Enermax 485W? with a X1900XTX (my next upgrade)
2x18A 12v rails.
(Just making sure :p)

Not 100% sure which value this is, But I'm going to jump to the conclusion that its the total wattage - (3.3v + 5v wattage) Which would be 205W

Mostly, you can't just add the two 12v rails, unfortunately :( . They feed from the same source. 2x18A would be 432W, it not. From the spec sheet your forced to assume its like you say 17A/205w. An overclocked XTX can use 12A alone. On a A64 rig the CPU is on the 12v as well. From that it looks a bit light tbh. I'll have a look around, the 12v combined wattage must be higher than 205W. Nearer 30A/360W I would guess.

Here you go, 32A/384W Enough, with some left over.

It means 12v1 can supply up to 14A. But it depends what 12v2 is doing. Its like two taps in the house. Turn on one you get the full flow, turn on two you get half. But you can't get more flow than the pipe feeding both.
