Just bought the MS wheel... did I do the right thing?

you wont get force feedback with any wheel except the official MS one, the implementation of force feedback on the 360 is very different to the PC & MS haven't licensed anyone else to implment it (this info taken from the logitech support forums).

I bought it for £75 but I don't really know that much about it.

How's the force feedback?
Does it have much "play" (looseness) with it and does it develop over time?
What's the quality like?
Worth £75?
how big is the clamp?

Looking forward to using it on:

PGR3
PGR4
DiRT
Forza2
Burnout

I was naive enough to think the wheel was completely wireless
The overall quality isnt bad, but part of the actual wheel looks cheap and toy like, but you get used to it.
My D pad is bad, it has hit and miss menu selection, and the actual wheel is off center to the right when powered up but seems ok while driving.
The paddles are well positioned, but dont have a lot of feel, not a big deal.
Design is pretty good, has cable slots on the under side of the pedals in either direction, neat battery compartment, the unit looks a good shape for lap use with plenty of anti slip pads, but wouldnt want to use it like that, ok for kids.

The clamp seems ok and quick and easy to use, its not too big, an arm that reaches into the middle of the table, the quick release mechanism leaves part of the clamp on the table.
When clamped to a table the wheel is in a good driving position but there is quite a lot of flex.
I love the way your heels touch the ground with the base going around the back, but the pedal unit can still tip forward, it really needs screwing/velcro down or a lead weight.
It works well with Forza 2, I dont notice any play, but other games didnt feel as good, bare feet are a must for the pedals as they dont have much feel, but the braking is still a lot better than with the pad.
I hate the force feeback though, I feel quite immersed in the game without it, perhaps its the software or my unit is faulty

I tried it with PGR3 and didnt like it after Forza 2, and I was hoping it would work with Full Auto as my son loves that, but it doesnt.
I didnt see any device drivers get installed when I first set it up, and I noticed Forza 2 still shows the pad layout whilst loading
Later on I went back to the wireless pad in Forza 2 and there is a big drop in feeling involved in the game, so its worth the money IMO, bare in mind they are making a good profit on this hardware, so £75 looks expensive against a core system at £150 but fairly good value considering over the years there have been some stinkers for not much less money.

Im looking forward to Sega Rally and Dirt, but I get the feeling its not going to be suited to arcade racers.

I'm thinking of getting one of these. Very good for 50 quid delivered.

Did you decide to get one? I'm very interested but would like to know the dimensions before i buy. Can't find any reviews online at all.

EDIT

Also the bit for the steering wheel seems very high.

Well I've got the wheel. does anyone else wobble slightly where the steering wheel meets the white base unit? also the motors make a lot of noise when I turn the wheel and there is no power, is this also normal?

Cheers.

anyone able to post the link to the guide to fix the allignment? As i can't find it anywhere on google :(
Cheers!

there isn't one as far as I could see but I'll open up mine later & take some pics to show you how, it is very simple (assuming you have a torx 10 security bit to get the screws out in the first place !).

Basically there is one motor inside that controls force feedback (vibration motors are in the wheel itself) that is connected to the wheel through a series of gears, you decouple the main gear from the motor, spin the wheel to centre then recouple the motor to the main gear, job done.

Ive found if you turn the wheel full lock left and then full lock right it should centre ok.

So guys what about your FM2 demo laptimes, finding it hard to match PAD times or no problem for you?

I don't have much time to play when i'm on the late shift so i'll let you know this weekend when i can put some time into it.Just got the Halo3 beta and my Matrix collection HD-DVDs came this morning too so Forza has taken a back seat for now.

all steering wheels are gimmicks, not only is a controller better, they cost far too much and they lose their fanciness after 1 week and are usually stuck sitting in a corner gathering dust

I would disagree on the first part, but sort of agree with the last one.

I had the rather fine Logitech Momo for a while and it completely altered my outlook on GTR and R factor.

The trouble was it just took up too much space, and took time to set up 'just so'. It was eBay-ed some weeks later. :( I will just use a pad in Forza 2, unless I become some sort of "drift hero" of course.

The only reason the wheel would be slower IMO is because Im having too much fun to worry about laptimes, but I went back to the pad and couldnt go any quicker than with the wheel, still need a lot of practice to be anywhere near the times Ive seen, but the good thing is I can see where there is time to be made up, which is probably a credit to the game.
