Just fitted Charge Motion Plates to the Mustang - My biggest car/engine job ever!

Hi there

I just fitted myself some Charge Motion Plates to my Mustang in my quest for more horse power and torque. The fitting is pretty straight forward but great care has to be taken as your removing the intake manifold and injectors so one bit of dirt means knackered engine and accidently knock an injector means new ones required.

So I proceeded with great care taking a few photo's along the way for the major steps of the installation:-


Start off by removing every as per the instruction, disconnecting cables, loosening bolts and removing etc. etc. Then gently lifting out the injectors. The instructions say you should release the fuel pressure line but this is messy and dangerous so I lifted both fuel rail assemblies all intack and gently put them to one side and then covered them with a white towel to keep them protected as can be seen here:-

Picture of the cylinder head, anything drops down into those holes and engine can be kissed goodbye, so extreme caution hence why the ATI umbrella etc. etc. to just reduce risk of anything dropping in:-

Here is a picture of the old Charge Motion plates just removed from the intake manifold, as you can see they have butterflies in them which open and close according to throttle position which aids in reducing emissions but restrict airflow, robbing power. As you can see I have carefully removed the rubber gaskets for use in the new charge motion plates:-

Here is picture of the intake manifold and throttle body inside my house with the new charge motion plates fitted which are polished and have no butterflies allowing for maximum airflow. Here you can see the green rubber gaskets in place:-

Here is the intake manifold now refitted back to the cylinder head ready for all connecting back up:-

Carefully refitting the fuel rails and injectors along with connecting all hoses and electrical connectors back up:-

Everything now connected back up including the battery etc. etc. However if I was to start the car up now the onboard ECU would instantly start flashing up error codes due to engine banks running lean. So first of all before starting the car I need to reflash my ECU with a latest tune from my tuner for the addition of the charge motion plates:-

So now all flashing is done, the big moment turning the key and hopnig the engine starts happily with no odd noises.









































YAY its starts!!! :D Leave it for 10 mins for the ECU to adapt as well and go out for a quick drive. Straight away I can hear a slightly deeper tone to the engine and even more responsive throttle response and as soon as the pressing the loud pedal to the floor and pushing past 4000rpm I can feel the extra power, so a good $300 well spend in my view.

Now just gotta get my Long Tube Headers, De-CATS and X-Pipe fitted hopefully in time for RR day as those should be worth a good 20 RWHP!

Certainly was m8, but nervous in case anything had found its way into the cylinder head or incase an injector decided to die, but I took great care and caution. The job took me 2 hours to do and fitting time is supposedly 2 hours too so am proud of myself, but some have done it in one hour.

Plus when you a do a job yourself you have that peace of mind that no shortcuts have been taken as you've done it yourself and taken the time.

I've now fitted:-
Cold Air Induction Kit
Charge Motion Plates
Uploaded Custom Tunes to the cars ECU.
Mods pre-fitted by Saleen was Under Drive Pulleys and Cat back exhaust.

The next mod to do now is the Long Tube Headers (Manifolds), De-CATS and exhaust X-Pipe.

All the above should increase the stock cars power outputs from 300BHP and 320lb-ft upto 350-370BHP and close to 380-400lb-ft of torque. Which is good as overall cost netted is sub 2k including shipping and any labour charges, but upto now I've fitted everything myself. However the manifolds I am gonna leave to the Pro's I think mainly because I don't have any ramps.

Yes as USA have different emission laws in different States with California been extremely strict. It will pass our MOT test fine as long as the race CATs are fitted, but mayb fail with race pipes in place.
 
What was that Pre-cat thing you put on?

When i think of Cats i think of restriction.
Is it different and does it help?
Does it cause any restriction :confused:

The Pre-CAT was a hydro-carbon filter in the air intake track, yes it did make the engine rev quicker but since then I've fitted a complete Cold Air Induction kit which has greatly improved things yet again as now the engine and pull in so much more air. :)
 
Aww read the title and I was expecting some fancy James Bond style rotating number plates for dodging speed cameras... :o

Anyway looks shiney :cool:

Thats not james bond. Thats the first Transporter :)
