Just gone from a 7800GT to an X1900XT... here's what I think.

Just took the plunge and upgraded from a 7800GT to a Sapphire X1900XT after acquiring one from MM for a paltry £245 and all I can say is... well err... not much actually because im too busy touching myself in intimate places over the performance boost its given me (please try not to think about that in too much detail). :D

Installation wasn't without its hitches though. In order to be sneaky and also test out a theory that you didnt need to reformat in order to go from NV to ATI I uninstalled all nvidia motherboard drivers and display drivers, ran drivercleaner from safe mode, and then went through my registry with a fine toothcomb removing every Nvidia entry that had been missed in order to avoid a reformat and then turned the PC off. I then switched off, took out the XFX 7800GT, and tenderly placed the X1900 in there. I switched the power button on and... and... 3 LED's of doom from my DFI SLI-DR. Arrgh! The fans powered up it just didnt boot. Resetting CMOS 3 times did nothing so I entered full panic mode and had dark visions of blowing my mobo/PCI-E slot or PSU. The PSU im using aint the best you see, being a Thermaltake 470w (have another one on order), so was convinced itd gone toots up. It took a ten minute CMOS reset with the power cord unplugged from the PSU to finally boot, for some reason the mobo really didn't like me swapping out the 7800GT for the X1900 without a heavy CMOS reset... weird. Anyway, the card was then working and the fun commenced. :)

I am also happy to report that a reformat wasn't necessary, ive had no errors in games and it appears that I managed to meticulously nuke all NV entries from my computer, so if you're careful enough you really can get away with going from NV to ATI without a reformat (although some doubltess prefer to, I just REALLY couldn't be arsed as i've done it so often this year!). I installed the Omega 6.3's and away I went!

My native res is now a demanding 1680*1050 due to my fantabalastic 20.1" NEC MultiSync 20WGX2 20.1" (best LCD monitor in existence imo) and the difference in performance in games has been absolutely astounding!

I fired up 3DMARK2005 for a quick untweaked run and got just over 10k, in aquamark I got a slightly sucky 77k but then again i'm running a pretty pants CPU by my standards, bit of a temporary job until I get a bit more cash. Anyway here's just a few opinions on my experiences with it in games etc so far with the following system:

3000+ Venice @ 2.7ghz
DFI SL-DR
2GB Samsung UCCC
X1900XT @ stock using Omega 6.3's.

Oblivion

With my XFX 7800GT Oblivion could run at 1680*, but I had all sliders pretty much down to half, most shadows disabled, water effects on low/med and no distant landscapes/buildings enabled. Grass was also set to less than half in order to maintain tolerable framerates, and even then it was hitting 15fps outside in woodland etc. Now with my X1900XT ALL graphical details are maxed, distant everything is on, and it never dips below 23fps even in forests... and the grass is on as far as the eye can see, not to mention the landscape LOD mods downloaded from TES which massively improve the resolution of the dstant textures and adds bump-mapping etc. Performance has essentially doubled or tripled in cases, and at much higher settings to boot. To say this makes me pleased is like saying Lisa Riley is big-boned.

COD 2

Another game that had crucified my 7800GT. At 1680* in DX9 mode it had been jerky and frequently falling to sub 20fps, and at about 3/4 of max details (also no AA or AF). On my X1900 I have everything maxed and its not dropping below 30fps in heavy firefights... and did I mention this is with 4x AA enabled too? The game just looks so ******* good I can't believe it, again performance has just about doubled!

Image quality

I have heard people drone on about "ATI's image quality being better" for some time and have never really paid it much heed, in fact in todays GPU situation its not that relevant considering the overall quality of the cards from both Nvidia and ATI. However I can state uncategorically that there is a discernible difference in ATI's favour, the textures are noticeably clearer and this was most evident in Star Wars: Empire at War which I have been staring at for a long while now with the Nvidia 7800GT. The difference isn't going to change the world but it is there and I have looked at this completely objectively when looking for the difference... I have no bias to any brand.

Stock cooler

The dreaded ATI "stock cooler", a name told to frighten small children at night with tales of its dragons breath heat, and fan roar that would put a Boeing 747 to shame. I even ordered a Zalman vf900cu before I got the card in anticipation of the intolerable cooler tha card would come with. Umm, what's the fuss please? The cooler is loud for about 2 seconds on startup and then goes downto a level consistant with the rest of my case (33dba or so). I played oblivion and COD2 for a while and the noise never changed, not once did I hear this feared "jet engine" racket that people warned me of. Idle temperatures are 43c and I havent seen it go above 65c yet, but I will be looking into this further. Very tempted to just send the Zalman back to OCUK but i'll give it a couple of days before I decide for definate. ;)

I'll stop now at the risk of droning on but just conclude in saying that this card is completely and utterly jaw-droppingly awesome, and I thought I had become a bit jaded when it came to PC hardware. This is the first ATI card i've had in my rig since the glory days of the 9800PRO and I am very, very impressed on all accounts. Performance in the most intensive games has gone through the roof, allowing me to max all details as well as stick 4xAA on for "free" in the majority of cases, and image quality is superb.

I haven't even tried overclocking it yet, but i'll get it up to XTX speeds tonight using ATI Tool as ATI Tray Tools seems to not support the card yet. Not sure if it has the faster RAM but guess i'll find out later.

What a great card, i'll add more later when I have chance to play around with it more! :D

EDIT -
After figuring out how to OC the damn thing it is now sitting pretty at XTX speeds. I know it has a lot more in it but temps have been reaching 80s at load with these speeds. Im going to try the Zalman (heard very mixed reports about it) today and see if that makes a difference, though to be perfectly honest how it can hope to beat the stock cooler is beyond me, the fan is whisper quiet and the cooling looks far less heavy duty. Not an OC'ers heatsink methinks, and I may swap it out for an X2 as I hear those are good coolers and very under-rated.

Sounds good!

I am with you on the not requiring a full reboot to change card manufacturers.

The last couple of weeks I have swapped backwards and forwards between my X1800XT and a 7800GTX with just running driver cleaner pro each time. No issues to report.

To add to comments on performance from a different perspective (comparing cards are roughly equal power) I was quite shocked by the performance difference in the only game I tested, COD2.

Basically I set the game up with the same settings:

Max everything (except corpses which is on medium as I find corpse stay to be pointless)
AA and AF set the highest in game settings
Texture settings set to extra (all three)

I am unsure of exact framerates but the X1800XT never dropped below what I deem playable (30fps) or at least I didn't notice any chopyness.

At the same settings the 7800GTX struggled to output playable framerates, dipping considerably with lots of enemies / smoke on screen. This however was fixed by adjusting the texture settings from extra to high.

I was still quite suprised at the difference these two cards show. (especially considering they are more equally matched than your old 7800GT and the X1900XT).

I havn't tried Oblivion yet but I may go out an get it this afternoon as I am itching to see what my rig can do. (I have it on the 360).

Also I am in agreement on the noise front (the X1800XT has the same cooler as the X1900XT).

I don't hear mine unless its on boot up or if I force the fan to 100% for benchmarks.

The 7800GTX on the otherhand always emitted a wine if thats how you describe it. Neither cards were loud in any respect bu the 7800GTX was definately audible compared to the X1800XT.

Anyway that is just my take on the cards.

Enojoy yours mate!

Hi there

Glad other people are seeing the improved image quality ATI have to offer and that they are not noisy as some people make out them to be. :)

Kinda unfair to compare a 200 quid card to a 300+quid card though, off course the X1900XT will be faster

Umm what're you on about? I was just relating my good experiences from the upgrade and talking about the performance inprovements I saw, not bad-mouthing the 7800GT which has served me very well. I know full well its a lower bracket card, so please don't send the thread OT by jumping to conclusions about my intentions with this thread.:p

Just the sort of post I needed :)
Think i'll go ahead with the upgrade to 1900xtx then

Go for it mate it's well worth it!

Agreed, I think they've had a LOT of unjustified bad press in that department!

You are saying the IQ is better with the X1900 and that it plays better which is why I said it's not really that strange as the X1900XT is a more expensive faster card so naturally it will be faster.

I'm not attacking you or sending the thread off topic, relax, this is not Speakers Corner.

IQ is the same on 7800 as it is on 7900 so that argument is irellevant. The IQ difference is a global thing to ATI and Nvidia, not card specific.

As for the performance difference I repeat, I was not meaning to do a "vs" thread, I was just commenting on the performance differences I had noticed I am well aware they are in different price brackets thanks as that is blindingly obvious! The point was just for users to get a feel for the difference between the cards. :)

And I am relaxed thanks, I just thought yours was a bit of an odd and out of context comment in relation to why I made the thread so I clarified, no harm done. :)

I look at it this way, Nvidia and ATI make the best graphics cards there are, and to choose one upon the other is personal preference. Think thats it really.

I went out and got hold of an X1800XT 512MB purely for oblivion, very pleased so far. Never been able to stretch my budget to the top end of each gen, generally have around £200 to spend when it comes to upgrading graphics but VERY, VERY please with results from this too.
Does seem oblivion is very biased towards the ATI cards more than much of a performance difference (almost to the point where it looks like theres actual bugs/issues with nvidia rendering of the game). Other option is that as its basically a 360 port and the 360 has ATI graphics... likely be sorted in time :)

Just slightly off topic - What sort of FPS are you getting on what sort of settings. (Just trying to work out what I can expect).

Cheers

I'm waiting with baited breath for my 7900gt (not bought here) and the zalman along with it. I have been using an ATi card since I first built an AMD based PC, a Radeon 8500, then I had a 9500 modded to 9700 :), then a 9800 pro modded to XT, then an x800pro vivo modded to XTPE, then an actual XTPE on a very good offer, then an X850XT PE, then finally a Radeon x1800xl @ XT clocks... lol

So having seen these volt mods and the possibility of getting 7900gtx performance for £220 odd I couldn't stop myself. So, since I have always been impressed with ATi's cards and never had driver problems (don't know how I avoided those...) it is time for nVidia to impress me, if it turns out to be a good experience I might get another and SLi them... :p

Interesting to see that the x1900 cards are having an impact on nVidia users' opinions, just hope I don't regret not getting one. Glad you like your new card! ;)

Totally agree with Richdog. The X1900 is an amazing card that just gets better with the latest games. I too was very impressed with the speed and texture quality moving from my 7800 GTX 512.

I'm running Oblivion at 1920x1200 with HDR and all the detail and its totally smooth. No slow downs, no crashes and no glitches. My only real comment is the swaying grass makes me feel sick. Cracking game.

With reference to noise I think case cooling has a big impact on the speed of the fan. If you have no flow then the X1900 will scream while playing the likes of Oblivion and Fear otherwise its not too bad. Mine is totally silent but then it is water cooled :D

I agree with your post Richdog & about the IQ, i have been saying that ATI looks better imo for a while, having played with many ATI / Nvidia cars.

I do think games look better on my X800GTO2 (moded) than on my 7800GTX 512MB (if the exact same settings are used). Still got my new card at a very good price so cant complain & only tried one set of drivers for it.

Looks like you got a good deal on your X1900XT too. Well done.

I've had the X850XT and now the X1900XT-X.

However, it IS noisy, during games you can hear the fan turn up in speed and it's very annoying at night especially, sounds like a hoover.
Im not usually one to moan about noise but it really is noticeable IMO.

I've ordered a 7900GTX because Im gonna try the Nvidia route!

Wish i had time to stand still in a game and admire the textures.Screw that give out and out framerate and let me die a happy bunny.

True, I was playing with the scenary in Fear (the swinging lights) admiring the detail/reflections and a bad guy shot me in the back! :p
