Just got hit by nasty virus!

The funny thing is that UAC itself is actually a convenience feature and people disable it because they find it inconvenient - not realising that for most of their computing lives they've been flying by the seat of their pants.

Indeed, once you install and setup your system, you should only be seeing UAC when running newly compiled program,s or new installations, or things that can severly effect your system. Things like malwarebytes, things like afterburner, things like trogens and viruses...
So unless you are writing and compiling fresh programs all the time, it shouldn't bother you, and if it is the case that you write new stuff all the time, then maybe your work machine should be networked but not the one you browse on.

i would recommend if you can get this virus off the computer to upgrade your antivirus

if you bank with Barclays you get free kaspersky

as for getting rid of the virus you could use ms config from safe mode to stop the virus software from starting and then remove it with a good antivirus

I've had this tonight. I couldnt access the internet, All exe files were blocked plus my security was all disabled. I had to go into safe mode, ran MalwareBytes and it removed the malware, but after a reboot, the firewall was switched off and I was unable to restart the service. Fortunately I had a system restore point from 2 days ago. After the restore, I ran MalwareBytes again and removed a couple more things. My firewall is now back and all looks ok.

I have no idea where this came from, I was using firefox and ie at the time. Both browsers shut down before the virus screen. And yes I had UAC disabled, but it's now enabled.

Just a quick note my son got this with both malwarebytes and mse enabled. Rkill didn't work and the system would shut down after about 3 minutes for a fatal error, only took 15 mins to format lol

AVG is generally good I have been using it for quite some time too. I think that virus might be a zero day threat (too new to identify) this can happen to any antivirus program but it is also a good idea to try new ones from time to time, I think Avast and Malwarebytes are also good ones.

At any case, I think you should do a clean install asap because once infected it is very difficult to clean up all traces of the virus and you are likely to get re-infected after the clean up.

I also recommend you never type in any passwords or banking information on the computer until you clean it up and just to be safe change all your passwords after the clean install.

If you got nothing worth saving or nothing you care about losing always best to wipe. i always advise people once they have gotten a really bad virus off their computer to backup their stuff and then wipe and load their machine fresh. better to be safe than sorry
