Just got pulled

Was doing 90 ish on the M4 when I saw flashing blue lights in my rear view mirror. The lights belonged to an unmarked Skoda Octavia VRs in silver.
Pulled over to the shoulder and joined the officer in his car. Nice bloke. Had a chat about cars. Decided that although I was breaking the speed limit, I wasn't driving dangerously as the road was nearly clear and had good observation and lane dicipline.
Off I drove at 68mph with a slapped wrist.

Not all coppers are speed limit obsessed.

I hope if I ever get pulled then I have a similarly decent copper who does it.

I'm like you - i'll do more than that number painted in the red circle, but I'll do it safely, in correct lanes, keeping a proper distance and indicating where needed.

Outstanding, i always find traffic officers a pretty good bunch who realise when your not taking the michael. Got let of last year on the M6 when i was caught doing 110!! I know, I know but i had to get home to see my wee girl as she was ill.

Explained this and was let off with a fixed fine which was more than fair. Top bloke too even kept trying to tell me bad jokes!

Its all on the way you handle it aswell. If you act like a complete ass and deny it all then they are obviously gonna be gunning for you, but if you have a smart civil conversation then I'm sure it works out better than expected.

I disagree, whilst you might make a fair cop decide to give you a penalty for being a twit there will always be some coppers that are going to stick to the letter of the law regardless.

What annoys me is the lack of consistancy. IMO they should always stick to the letter of the law OR always use their own judgement.

Whether the copper takes a shine to you or not shouldn't come into it.

This does help your chances, certainly.

I started the conversation with "Sorry.. I was going a bit fast there".

You see a speed camera would never have given you the chance, or observed and professional discretion.

I have been pulled over a handful of times, and fortunately with polite and humble talking as well as not driving dangerously, you do have a chance of being given the benefit of the doubt.

Glad to hear you were treated fairly Rilot. :)

I have never ever had a problem with the police. I have been pulled over a couple of times and both times they have said 'well, you were going fast but other than that, your driving was fine' and I have just been let off.

Yet recently on the M6 got done by a safety camera with a 1km range at 100mph and I have to go to court. Any actual officer would have given a fixed penalty or probably not even have bothered stopping me considering the traffic conditions.

Kind of, I think you know the point I was trying to make: Have a simple "over 75 and your nicked rule" or look at each case on its own merits. I would MUCH prefer the latter but IMO there needs to be consistancy.

Depending on the copper though he might take someone saying that as an admission of driving without due care or something, and be MORE inclined to come down harder.

Whilst I think how you behave might get you out of a non-endorseable fixed penalty notice, I really don't think it will make a huge difference for speeding cases - unless it's marginal (and 90 in a 70 isnt :)). At the end of the day if they DIDN'T do you for it they'd only be accused of double-standards, etc.

Im going with the "you lucky bast" crowd. :)

Or the actual officier may have come down harder on you - deciding you were driving dangerously and at nearly 50% over the speed limit.

(And if you got caught doing 100mph anywhere in this country how can you complain when you get caught!)

Eek, you should never admit you did something until he says so. Coppers i know have given people tickets after they've pulled someone for having a broken taillight (when the copper knew they were speeding but not having a laser on board), coming up to the car, saying "do you know why you were stopped" and the driver going "sorry i was doing 55 in a 40" and the policeman going "oh were you? thats admitting speeding, here is your £60 fine and 3 points, and also....you have a taillight out".

Wait til they say 'you've been pulled for speeding' then start the grovelling ;)

Got a bit of a query if anybody here is 'in the know' about specs. Didn't think this warrants a new thread to keep things tidy :)

Was just returning home on the M56 and stuck in traffic crawling past the first specs cam at ~2mph and stopped several times due to heavy traffic, but because I had stopped for so long I had forgotten about the cameras. (There was a lorry accident between the two sets of cameras).

On the way out when traffic had cleared I might have been going ~60mph in a 40 (temp limit), but because it's an average check between the two points will I get a ticket for that? I'm not even sure the first camera picked me up because I was tucked behind a coach :(
