Ok, I know I'm going to get slated for this but I've just put the deposit down on a brand spanking new car.

One of the big selling points for me was the the 78mpg extra urban fuel economy, which, in my head means I can justify the extra expenditure.

Can anyone guess what it is? ;)

Woa - this thread exploded. Sorry, I've just got back from lunch.

As one person guessed, its the new Fiesta. However its not the Econetic (which gets 86mpg extra urban!). Its just the 1.6TDCI.

Now I was expecting a negative reply, and the 'ignorance' comments. However I think this is a perfectly logical decision. Buying this car will be a far cheaper alternative to my current situation.

It will mean I know exactly what my outgoings regarding getting to work and back are for the next 3 or 4 years. No unexpected breakdowns, no hassle, no more getting my hands dirty.

As for the exact purpose. I do a 100 mile commute every day. So yes, an efficient diesel is the right option. As for the 'no small car can handle a motorway'. Well, this isn't a small car. Its almost exactly the same size as the original focus.

You wait, we'll get the 'AS LONG AS HE IS HAPPY WHAT DOES IT MATTER' crew in here eventually, thoroughly missing the point that its easy to be happy when you dont fully understand something :p
I understand fully what I'm doing. Yes drove a Fiat Coupe 20v turbo for 3 years. I also have my mad beetle (which will remain my 'toy' ;) )

However at the moment I need something ultra reliable and cost efficient for getting to work and back. And the bike is just more hassle than its worth. I've bought many second hand cars before. But there comes a time when, for once, you just want something off the top shelf.

interesting reading some of these replies. At least it's got you talking and given a few of you a chuckle.

Before anyone else says that for a 100 mile commute they'd need a comfortable car, I suggest you take a test drive in the new fez. It's rootes may be a supermini, but this new version has grown up. As soon as I tested it I knew it was the perfect car to fit my needs.

Call me nuts but I'd prefer this to a couple year old rep car.

I plan on keeping this for a long while so residuals mean nothing to me. If you want to know the exact figures, with the extras I wanted I managed to get the car for 11384 which is a fair chunk off main dealer prices.

Feel free to suggest 2nd hand buys for around the same price range. I could have got loads of 'better' cars. But I didn't want them. This is the car I wanted.

If there was a 2nd hand one available in exactly the options I chose in the colour and model I wanted then, maybe. But I'm happy.

it makes me laugh when people say residuals mean nothing.

If it really meant nothing you would have ut a deposit on a V12 Ferrari or a DB9.....
How utterly ridiculous.

Residuals are relevant only when you come to sell the car. You say this fiesta will only be worth 2.5k in 4 years time. How much do you think a 2nd hand audi a4 would be worth with the same miles on it?

All cars devalue.

Thanks for all the replies.

I think I should start by refuting the 'buying a new car to save money' argument. I'm buying a new car because I'm fed up of second hand cars and want something brand new, build to my exact specifications.

I've chosen to buy an efficient diesel because it will make it cheaper to run.

If I was buying with my funny hat on I'd of put a deposit on the fiat bravo I looked at. ;p

I'm glad at least a few people can see some logic in it. But ae fox says, I don't need defending. This is a place for open discussion. If I didn't expect that, I wouldn't of posted. Threads where everyone says 'nice car' are dull anyway.

Slight aside but how on earth is the new fiesta still classed as a supermini the thing is huge, a few years ago it would have been called a family hatchback. Cars have been getting bigger and bigger I think it's time for some reclasification, I bet the new KA is the same size as the fiesta was a model or two ago.
To be honest, I think they'd of done better by calling it a different name. I feel that this car is as different to the previous fiesta as the focus was to the escort.

looking at the figure more closely, I'm getting roughly a 9k loan which equates to 185 a month.

At present, my golf is doing 30mpg. Over a month I spend around 300 on fuel. Sadly, since I've bought it I've spent roughly a grand a month on repairs. (I know, disaster). Ignoring the ridiculous repair costs if I spend roughly 120 on fuel with the new car, it will work out as roughly the same outgoing, with the added benefit of certainy less chance of unforseen costs, and an awful lot more enjoyable drive.

/Edit for iPhone oddities.

You what?

Well the plan was a simple, reliable vw that I could use to commute during the winter months and sell when t warms up.

The reality was a knackered injection pump, fuel lines, lift pump, mounting bracket, gearbox, gear linkage, warm up regulator, injectors, rear brakes. And to top it off the radio keeps loosing reception.

After all that I'm now sitting on a train as one of the wheel bearings has gone.

Put it this way, it's the last old car I'll ever buy.

If you ask my honest opinion, I don't think this car will depreciate half as bad as you guys are making out.

Efficient diesel engined family sized superminis are a car of the times and won't drop half as quick as your typical rep mobile.
Just look at the mondey tdci in the other thread. Down to 8k after only a year. Scary.

You can make anything sound good if the current car costs a grand a month on repairs. Heck you could lease an Aston Martin for that!!! Please tell me you've not factored the fact your current car is an absolute nail into your decision?!
As I said in the bit of the post you obviously skimmed, I'm not factoring that into my decision.

Hope ya like it :) when will you have pics? :D

it may be a little while. They have none in stock of the model I want, so gonna have I wait for it to be built. Still, got to be better than buying a 'new' car that may of been sitting round in a depot for 18 months.

Ahhhh - can't wait. Want it now!

My colour choice is very marmite. I looked at quite a fee different colours in the showroom. Black didn't look good as it hid a lot of the angles and details. Silver is just too dull. There were some default ford colours Which you see on every model, the. There were 3 'feature' colours.

Vision blue - which looks good in photos, but was a bit girly in real life.
Green - like the one top gear reviewed. Too wacky IMO.
Tango - it looked really good in the flesh and contrasts well against the silver lights and the black trim. Plus it's quite a rare colour.

The silver ducts won't be on my car. I think that pic is a concept model.

I've decided to change my colour choice. Fortunately there is enough of a lead time on these for me to be able to change without penalty at this stage.

I'm now getting an Ocean Blue one (Virtually OcUK blue).
