Kinect: "your order is now being released for packing"

Just wait till a few days after release maybe be some used/returned ones around from people who havent got a big enough space. Seems strange you ordered pretty close to when the pre-orders went up, does seem weird perhaps they made a mistake in sending you that email.

Or the rumour that the UK launch allocation is pitiful is true; either way I'm not fussed as I'm in the US until the 19th anyway!

Some review scores shamelessly stolen from elsewhere:

Reading the reviews on IGN I would never have guessed they would have got the scores they did. Scores seem higher than the review suggests.

Yes I watched the video reviews, talk of lag and bad motion control put me off a little bit on these launch titles. Shame they had to dumb down the processor to keep the costs down.

I was expecting 1:1 motion but it seems it isn't doing that :(

Reviews look poor at best and the fact you need 8ft of unobstructed space to use it properly is quite a deal breaker!

The space limitations are one of the biggest downfalls IMO. The layout of my house, although not small, means I will never buy a Kinect.

Deal breaker for me too, not that I have small rooms, but the fact that furniture would need to be moved around etc means I will not get one.

Actually, I'm quite amazed that some games are getting 8/10, and semi-positive reviews, and by beta-testers comments that it can work in quite small spaces with some clutter, I think 5ft * 4ft was mentioned a few times.

I might pick one up (as I did Move) for the novelty factor, and I think this stands some chance of actually replacing the Wii in our front room, something Move failed to do (And that's no shame, It's in the study, awaiting my gaming use!)..

Same space requirements that Wii and Move recommend also aren't they?

Well I can play Wii and Move fine, but I certainly don't have the recommended 6ft from TV space that Kinect needs, plus the space either side.

I've only seen engadgets review, but they said anything less and it would become an issue.

As you'll be reminded at least once every game, Kinect recommends (and at times requires) that you be six to eight feet away from the sensor while in play, with no coffee table or ottoman in your way. This isn't exactly the easiest setup to obtain, especially in apartments and dormitories. We set up the Kinect in multiple locations, and none of them were quite right -- we moved couches, twisted the TV diagonally, even pushed back the sensor a few inches to maximize as much space as possible. Point is, the six feet isn't just a recommendation, it's pretty much a requirement.

Some people get by with the Wii/Move by just standing in one spot and waggling their arms, virtually no floor space is required, but quite frankly you aren't getting the most out of them if you are that compromised.

I actually find Move is quite finnicky, having to change the Zoom on the camera, and having to move the camera to get allow maximum space to ensure games like Table Tennis calibrate properly etc, I expect Kinect to be slightly worse still, but having a 5*4ft bit of floor visible doesn't sound exactly beyond the realms of normality, and if you somehow have this amazingly messy room etc, then clearly any game requiring 3D manoevrement(tm) is going to be an issue on any platform.

It's 6ft from the camera, and that's 'recommended'.. Sony recommend 8ft for Move, but you can get away with less..

Some beta-testers mounted the camera close to the wall, above and behind the TV to give them more distance, and so they got it working easily with 5ft of room, but yes, it does need to see 'some' floor.. that is more of a requirement then Move..

ANd yeah, it aint' for everyone.. and it's focus is hyper casual types at the moment, so unless you just want it for the giggles etc, it's probably best just ignored..

I've read the not so flattering reviews, that just confirm my descision not to buy. Latency issues when Kintect has to do more. Movement recognition problems. Also I just don't have the space for it.

Its hard to believe the Wii is 4 years old now, while all the others are just playing catch up. I wonder what Nintendo have up their sleves.

Well Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg is already cooking up the excuses as to why Kinect is being meet with lukewarm reviews, granted this is software side and makes no mention of the hardware also getting mixed reviews – but its interesting..

I don't know how reviewers will grade those games because they're so unique and so different to what the reviewers have played with controllers. We'd love to see great reviews but I don't think you'll see the same type of correlation between reviews and actual sales of the game, would be my guess.

I think MS real chances of getting this kit off the ground is to sell on mass to the ill informed casual gamer. Lets face it, any clued up semi or serious gamer hardcore or whatever gamer will not in all sense touch this with a bargepole. Upon saying this, the comments of getting the kit for young children due to controller less gameplay is a compelling notion, I can see the appeal with that, keeping little Jonny happy over the Christmas period and not worry about a controller being launched across the living room is a major plus for any parent.

For any other games player though, this really does look to be a waste of space – and you need to have quite a bit of that from the sounds of it.

I agree with what you have said, the whole kinect thing never interested me until I thought about mucking around controller free with my son. I would have liked a better 1:1 movement experience lag free even if it cost me more money but I understand why they dumbed it down to make a price point.

Oh well maybe next time. The next xbox will have to come with this technology out the box and blu ray.

I see a certain large highstreet store has kinect up again for pre-order for release day? Thought they was all sold out? So i reckon those who already have a pre-order shouldnt worry.

Maybe the difference is that with the wii and move you can sit on sofa and it tracks the wand/wii mote. It doesnt matter if there is a table in the way or stuff on the floor its only looking at the controller as such. With kinect it has to see all of you to track (with current games) so you cant have anything in the way perhaps this is why some have issues?

I am really sorry to advise but due to the high demand for Kinect bundle we are unable to dispatch your order in time for the release date. We expect dispatch of your order to be in early December 2010.

:(
But I can wait till December... I'm not cancelling and paying full price else where.
