King Abdullah feeling left out - sacks Jordanian government

I think part of the problem is I don't trust any of our leaders to do what they should in a fair and reasonable manner. If we could support the people there and allow them the strength to find themselves fair and just leaders then I could see something good coming of the revolutions.

As it is...

what if they don't want a fair and just leader?

Very few groups ever do. what they want is a leader that favours their group and ****s over whatever minority/group they don't like.

You bet!

If people think petrol is expensive now, lol

We would enter a terminal recession.

It'd mean going around south Africa. Would make an immediate impact on our lives in terms of prices.

Going around the cape of good hope only adds approximately 8 days to the voyage and is currently the only option for the worlds biggest cargo vessels many of which are tankers as they are too big. The fee for going through the canal is already very expensive and the risk of piracy off Somalia makes the Cape route even more appealing.

Egypt is a very interesting country as it's economy relies almost entirely on forign money. Tourism is easily the biggest earner in the country so the establishment of an Iranian style Muslim state would seem highly unlikely as it would destroy the main income sources over night. Much more likely is a moderate two tiered approach as seen in Dubai as they would need to make allowances for westeners to keep the money flowing.

No matter what sort of government was in place the Suez canal would remain open for business and expensive as it is now purely becuase it is an easy revenue stream for the government. I would expect to see occasional out breaks of threats and posturing much like Iran with it's nuclear sites and North Korea with it's missiles without anything really comming from it.

Isreal will just continue to be Isreal they are the one and only true military power in the region and while I'm sure they appreciate the odd friendly state in the region they certainly don't need them.

The key question in Egypt at the minute is what will the military leadership do, they have effectively appointed every leader since the king was given the boot and show no sign of changing this, will the people accept a new leader installed by the military and some sham elections or will that not be enough this time? If the people are unwilling to accept an appointed leader will they or the army be prepared for civil war? The current protests are all very well and good but they are only going on becuase the military have allowed them too were this situation to change would the army on the ground obey it's leadership and crush the protestors? Would the protestors have the stomach or means for the fight?

Very interesting and disturbing times.
