Knocked over a cyclist today

I would strongly advice you inform your insurer and make a report to your local police with 24 hours of the accident. Any RTA resulting in an injury, no matter how minor has to be reported to the police within that time frame by law, you could find yourself in a bit of hot water if the chap decides to make a claim later on (he has up to 3 years to do so) and you haven't reported it. A few minutes now might save you a lot of hurt later.

From your version of events it doesn't look to be your fault anyway, so cover yourself.

x2. Absolutely get this done now. Even if nothing comes of it, at least you have done all you can do.

I think it was 100% the cyclist's fault personally... There's no way you can anticipate a cheeky cyclist nipping in front of you as you are about to pull onto a roundabout.

funny how drivers hate cyclists, yet cyclist seem to be ok sharing the road with drivers its just the drivers taking everything out of context and calling every cyclist an idiot :) just because cyclists have better view, and can filter through traffic while you're on a standstill doesn't mean you need to hate them? i mean i do cycle through redlights when the crossing is empty for e.g. - what is the point stopping if no one is going to penalise me and no one is crossing the road?

same with other red lights where i cause no disturbance, and with pathways i do cycle on them when the bit of road is just VERY unsafe for cycling - there's one part of road where i will cycle on the pathway no matter what, as the drivers get REALLY close to you and there have been 2 deaths already :)

but yeah there are rubbish cyclists and rubbish drivers and idiot pedestrians.. oh wait.. we are all human and we are all in control of something? how can you "paint" all the same colour and say all the cyclists are idiots :o the same way i could say all the drivers are idiots? but nope, only some are taking the pee and risking someones life just because they got in front of them! :p

rant over - not much to do with the post i quoted.

I rarely leave a gap on my left side (at lights) for this precise reason. I don't need a cyclist filtering weaving through just as I'm about to turn left. I'd hate to be a bus driver for this precise reason.

this is one of the things i don't like about cyclists.. if i see a car is ready to turn ill either get behind it or stay right in front of it :)

I was hit last year in a pretty similar situation. I was coming round a motorway/A road roundabout junction and was hit by a car accelerating from a standstill at the bottom of the slip road. I was unhurt bar a sprained wrist and the bike just needed a new back wheel and disc rotor.

I got them to pay for the repairs and called it straight. In hindsight I reckon I was in their blindspot due to taking the roundabout slightly wider than usual and the car didn't check far enough to the right to see me.

Count yourself lucky I had a customer today who wanted an insurance quote.....£4.9k worth. Guy just drove into the side of him changing lanes so blindspot again I assume.

Look 685 frame, dura ace shifters/rear mech and Look keo ti pedals + two bottle cages.

For real? So if a car overtakes then I smash into it, it's their fault too? What a load of cods wallop.

Slightly different with a bike though as they weave through the traffic, he's not only cut him up, he's overtaking on a roundabout and I bet he weren't indicating either.

If i was him i'd be getting the cyclist to repair the scratches on my car, the cyclist should have waited and not endangered himself with a stupid maneuver.

In all liklihood this is a bit of a 50/50. The OP is vague as to where the cyclist came from - he probably doesn't know because the cyclist did something unexpected while he was looking to pull out at the island.

It happens, lucklily the injuries were minor and it sounds like both parties will learn from the accident.

Looking at the roundabout from above its difficult to see why I didn't spot him. If he was coming from the right hand lane of traffic which had priority he would have clearly been in my field of view.

It wasn't quiet like on this image, there was traffic queueing in all three directions, with lots of people on foot using the pedestrian refuges, kids & mums pushing prams towards the school which is about 200 mtrs up the right lane.

I still suspect he had come up on the right-hand pavement then hopped onto the road on my hard right just as the gap opened up in front of me after the white van had passed.

I don't think a cyclist would be crazy enough to do what you suggest. You didn't see him, and definitely should have seen him. Always move your head slightly so you can see behind the supports either side of the windscreen.

Also if you hit him rather than him hitting the side of your car, your reactions are awful.

Also you are supposed to tell your insurance company about all RTA incidents. If you don't and this guy later claims PI, they won't be too happy. You are supposed to tell them even if no claim happens.

I wouldnt think too much about it hes not badly hurt and you are paying the repair cost. I have seen many cyclist get knocked off there bikes over the years and some havent made it to there feet after being hit.
