You're right, I'm grateful he wasn't badly hurt.

It's refreshing to see a poster not trying to make excuses for an accident and having a general all round decent attitude. I tip my hat to you sir. 
As already said - you give way to the right so the cyclist had right of way.
However, if he did come off the pavement to the right he still has right of way but he wasn't doing himself any favours - such a move is a bit stupid. You've got to make sensible calls regardless of who has right of way and that doesn't sound like one.

Anyway all aside, well done on stopping and being helpful.
As a contrast, when I was hit earlier this year (driver was clearly at fault, turned from other side of the road onto my right of way), the driver had no compassion at all, as I was lying on the road, shouting at me saying it was my fault.
Luckily 20 school kids witnessed it and shouted back at her, as she would have hit them if not me first. Driver admitted liability by the end of the day and all paid out quickly.
